The faithful of Holy Archangel Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Baltimore, Maryland, gathered in prayer and joyful fellowship to celebrate the 50th birthday of their pastor, Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Kryshtompol. Organized by the parish community, the celebration expressed the love of a spiritual family for the priest who accompanies them through the joys, sorrows, and daily responsibilities of Christian life.
The parish had invited both hierarchs of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, His Eminence Metropolitan Antony and His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, to share in this meaningful occasion. Because of Metropolitan Antony’s health, he was unable to attend. His absence remained a prayerful concern for the community, reminding those gathered of the bonds of love and responsibility that unite the Church across distance and circumstance.
His Eminence Archbishop Daniel traveled to Baltimore accompanied by seminarians of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary. Their participation brought the ministry of theological education into the heart of parish life. Serving at the altar and chanting the choir responses in the ancient traditions of Byzantine and Kyiv chant, the seminarians helped lead the congregation in worship. Their presence also offered a hopeful glimpse of the Church’s future, as men preparing for ministry learned through prayer, service, and fellowship with the faithful.
The welcome at the entrance to the temple was especially touching. The youth of the parish greeted the archpastor, and Father Vasyl’s daughter, Evhenia, presented him with the traditional offering of bread and salt. These simple gifts carried a profound meaning. Bread spoke of hospitality, nourishment, and the willingness to share the blessings of one’s home, while salt recalled faithfulness and the Gospel’s call to preserve goodness in the world.
For Archbishop Daniel, the greeting also held a deeply personal significance. Having watched Evhenia grow from the time of her birth, he now received her welcome as she stood before him at the entrance to the church. In that moment, the passage of years became visible as a blessing. A child he had known from infancy was now participating in the life of the parish and extending its welcome to her archpastor. Her greeting offered a quiet testimony to the continuity of faith within a family and to the relationships nurtured through years of pastoral care.
Members of the Parish Board of Administration presented Archbishop Daniel with flowers. The archpastor received them from the hands of the board’s president, Pani Alla, who was herself celebrating her birthday that day. This shared occasion added another note of warmth to the welcome.
The flowers expressed more than ceremonial courtesy. Their beauty recalled the many gifts that flourish within a parish when people offer their time, work, and love to God. Just as a bouquet draws together different blossoms into a harmonious whole, a parish community brings together people of different generations and experiences in a common life of prayer and service. Presented by Pani Alla on her own birthday, the flowers also became an offering of gratitude for life itself and for the opportunity to serve the Church.
Together with the clergy, Father Vasyl welcomed Archbishop Daniel into the temple. He asked for the archpastor’s prayers and expressed gratitude for his visit, his love for the parish family, and the blessing his presence brought to the Kryshtompol family. His welcome reflected the brotherhood of pastoral ministry, in which a priest and his bishop share responsibility for the spiritual well-being of the faithful.
During the Divine Liturgy, Deacon Mykola Stefanyk led the prayerful petitions and proclaimed the Holy Gospel. The seminarians’ chanting supported the congregation’s prayer, drawing those present into the worship of the Church through melodies handed down across generations.
Archbishop Daniel delivered his homily in English and Ukrainian, reflecting on Luke 4:31–36, the authority of Christ’s word, Father Vasyl’s birthday, the Protection of the Mother of God, and the courage and suffering of those defending Ukraine. The following expanded sermon text brings these themes together:
“Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,
“In today’s Gospel, our Lord enters the synagogue in Capernaum and teaches. Those who hear Him are astonished because His word carries authority. Then, in the midst of that place of worship, a man tormented by an unclean spirit cries out. Christ commands the spirit to be silent and to leave him, and the man is delivered.
“This encounter reveals something we must remember whenever fear seems stronger than hope: evil can disturb a person’s life, but it cannot overcome the authority of Christ.
“The Lord sees the suffering man. He does not turn away from him or reduce him to the disturbance he causes. He restores him. Before Christ, this wounded person remains someone worthy of attention, mercy, and freedom.
“We must be careful never to confuse this Gospel account with a diagnosis of those who struggle with mental illness or emotional suffering. Such struggles call for compassion, appropriate care, and faithful companionship. The Church must be a place where suffering people can seek help without humiliation or fear.
“Here in Baltimore, as in every city, many people carry burdens that remain hidden from others. Someone comes to church worried about a medical diagnosis. Another is grieving a loved one. A young person feels overwhelmed by expectations. A parent wonders how to hold the family together. Someone smiles in public while privately struggling with loneliness.
“The Gospel calls us to bring these burdens into the presence of Christ. We do not need to pretend that everything is well before we approach Him. We come because we need His mercy.
“Yet we must also ask which voices we allow to govern our lives. We hear so many voices each day through our phones, our conversations, and our own anxious thoughts. Some tell us to be angry. Some encourage us to despise others. Some insist that we are worthless or that nothing can change.
“Christ calls us to listen to Him. His authority is revealed in truth, mercy, and the restoration of the human person. When we forgive, refuse to humiliate another person, seek help, or stand beside someone who suffers, we begin to order our lives according to His word.
“Today, we give thanks for Father Vasyl as he celebrates his 50th birthday. A birthday invites us to remember that life is a gift entrusted to us by God. For a priest, it is also an occasion to reflect on the people entrusted to his care.
“The priest stands with families at baptisms, weddings, hospital beds, and funerals. He listens to sorrow, encourages repentance, offers the Holy Mysteries, and helps people find their way back to prayer. Much of this work takes place quietly. Its fruits may be known fully only to God.
“Dear Father Vasyl, today your parish family gives thanks for your life and ministry. May the Lord strengthen you in prayer, grant you health, bless your family, and renew your joy in serving His people. May you continue to hear Christ’s voice clearly and help others recognize His presence in their lives.
“As we remember the Protection of the Mother of God, we turn to the Theotokos with the confidence of children seeking a mother’s intercession. Her example teaches us to receive the word of God and to remain faithful to her Son. Under her prayerful protection, we seek courage to face the responsibilities and trials before us.
“Our prayers also reach toward Ukraine and those defending its people and land. We remember the defenders who face danger, the wounded who endure long recoveries, the families awaiting news, and the parents mourning children who will never return home.
“We must never allow their suffering to become a distant concern. Christian love asks something of us. It asks us to pray faithfully, offer practical assistance, comfort the grieving, and welcome those whose lives have been uprooted by war.
“The authority of Christ calls us to resist the hatred that war seeks to plant within the human heart. We can defend life and seek justice while guarding our souls against cruelty. We can grieve deeply and still remain open to mercy.
“Beloved faithful, let this celebration strengthen the bonds of your parish family. Let gratitude for your pastor become a renewed commitment to prayer, worship, and service. Let your children see that the Church is a place where people care for one another. Let those who enter this temple burdened by sorrow discover that they do not have to carry it alone.
“Bring your fears to Christ. Listen to His word. Make room for His mercy in your home, your conversations, and your decisions.
“For evil may shout loudly - but Christ speaks with authority. And His is the final word. Amen.”
The spiritual center of the celebration was the reception of the Holy Eucharist. Numerous faithful approached the chalice to receive the Holy Body and Precious Blood of Christ, giving the gathering its deepest meaning. The community had assembled to honor the life of its pastor, and at the chalice its members were reminded of the source of every Christian life and vocation. Across differences of age, experience, and personal circumstance, they approached the same Lord, seeking forgiveness, healing, and strength. Parents and children, older parishioners and younger members of the community shared in the Holy Mystery that sustains the Church. In this communion, gratitude for Father Vasyl’s ministry became thanksgiving to Christ, whose grace makes that ministry possible. The prayers, chanting, and fellowship of the day found their fulfillment in this encounter with the Lord, who gathers His people and sends them back into the world to practice the love they have received.
At the conclusion of the service, Archbishop Daniel presented Father Vasyl with the Medal of Saints Borys and Hlib of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. The presentation honored his pastoral service, his care for the parish community, and his dedication to the life of the Church. The remembrance of Saints Borys and Hlib gave the recognition a spiritual depth, calling attention to the Christian virtues of faithfulness, humility, and steadfast love. Such an honor also invites renewed responsibility, encouraging its recipient to continue serving with gratitude and devotion.
The celebration continued with a festive luncheon prepared by the parish community. Greetings, songs, and shared conversation allowed the faithful to express their affection for Father Vasyl and his family. The work of those who organized, cooked, decorated, and welcomed guests revealed the generosity that sustains parish life. Their efforts made the gathering a personal expression of gratitude from the community to its pastor.
A particularly moving moment came when seminarian Reader Marian Meleshko offered Father Vasyl the gift of a song dedicated to his mother. The musical tribute brought the celebration back to the roots of a person’s life: the love received within a family, the sacrifices of parents, and the memories that accompany a child into adulthood. Within a celebration of priestly ministry, this remembrance also honored the quiet influence of a mother’s love and the many ways family life helps shape a vocation of service.
Father Vasyl’s 50th birthday became an occasion for the entire parish to give thanks for the relationships through which faith is lived and passed on. The youth’s welcome, Evhenia’s offering of bread and salt, Pani Alla’s presentation of flowers, the seminarians’ service, the reception of Holy Communion, and the fellowship around the luncheon tables all expressed different aspects of one shared life in Christ.
As the community looked toward the years ahead, the celebration offered an encouraging reminder that the Church grows through faithful people who continue to pray, serve, and care for one another. May the Lord grant Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Kryshtompol health, strength, and many blessed years, and may Holy Archangel Michael Parish continue to welcome each generation with the same warmth, devotion, and hope that marked this joyful day.
