The faithful family of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Palos Park, IL experienced a day of profound spiritual joy and thanksgiving as the parish gathered to celebrate what His Eminence Archbishop Daniel described as a “triple blessing” bestowed by Almighty God upon the community.

The sacred day united three significant moments in the life of the parish: the First Holy Confession of fifteen children of the parish family, the ordination of Deacon Basil Balke of Denver, Colorado to the Holy Priesthood, and the restoration of electrical power to the parish and surrounding community following severe storms and destructive weather that had recently affected the Chicagoland area.

As parishioners and visitors arrived at the holy temple, there was a palpable sense of gratitude and anticipation. Only hours before the celebration, electrical power had been restored to the church and surrounding neighborhoods after widespread outages caused by powerful thunderstorms that had impacted Palos Park and neighboring communities. The return of electricity and air conditioning allowed nearly 250 faithful to gather comfortably within the church to celebrate the blessings God had prepared for His people.

Upon his arrival, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, spiritual father of the Western Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, was warmly welcomed by the children who had spent months preparing for their First Holy Confession. The young faithful escorted the archpastor into the temple, their faces reflecting both excitement and reverence for the sacred day that would forever remain in their hearts.

Greeting the Archbishop were the pastor of the parish, Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Sendeha, Dobrodiyka Olena Sendeha, members of the Parish Board of Administration, parish leaders, and the faithful gathered in prayer. Welcoming Archbishop Daniel, Fr. Vasyl expressed the gratitude of the parish family for the hierarch’s presence and prayers as the children prepared to receive the Holy Mystery of Repentance and as Deacon Basil prepared to offer his life in service to Christ and His Holy Church through priestly ordination.

Responding to the warm welcome, Archbishop Daniel reflected upon the unique blessings of the day: “Today is truly a triple blessing in the life of this parish family. We witness the children approaching the Holy Mystery of Repentance for the first time, we witness the ordination of a new priest for Christ’s Holy Church, and we give thanks to God for the restoration of power to this community after days of hardship. Through all these events, we see the loving hand of God caring for His people.”

Concelebrating with Archbishop Daniel were Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Sendeha, pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish; Very Rev. Fr. Howard Sloan of the Western Eparchy of the UOC of the USA; Very Rev. Fr. Petro Levko, pastor of St. George Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Yardville, New Jersey; Protodeacon Andrii Fronchak; Deacon Basil Balke; and clergy and faithful who had gathered from near and far to witness the sacred events.

The first part of the celebration centered upon the fifteen children of the parish who approached the Holy Mystery of Repentance and Confession for the first time in their young lives.

Under the loving spiritual guidance and careful preparation of their pastor, Fr. Vasyl Sendeha and Dobrodiyka Olena, the children learned the meaning of repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation with God. Through prayer, study, and conversations about the love and mercy of Christ, they came to understand that Confession is not a moment of fear but a sacred encounter with the Lord Who embraces His children with compassion and grace.

As the children approached the Mystery of Repentance, many parents were visibly moved. Tears filled the eyes of mothers and fathers who witnessed their sons and daughters taking an important step in their spiritual journey. The sacred atmosphere reminded all present that the Church continues to nurture souls from childhood, guiding them toward a lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ.

In his homily, Archbishop Daniel addressed both the children and the faithful, emphasizing that Confession is the bridge that brings us home to God. “God already knows everything about us,” he reminded the children. “He is not waiting to punish us. He is waiting to embrace us. Through Confession we place our hearts into His loving hands and receive the gift of peace.”

The spiritual climax of the celebration came during the Divine Liturgy when Deacon Basil Balke was called forth to receive the grace of the Holy Priesthood through the laying on of hands of Archbishop Daniel, with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.

As Deacon Basil approached the Holy Altar, accompanied by prayerful silence and heartfelt emotion, the faithful understood that they were witnessing one of the most sacred moments in the life of the Church.

The ordination service unfolded with profound beauty and theological depth. Kneeling before the Holy Altar, Deacon Basil offered himself completely to Christ and His Church. The ancient prayers of ordination echoed throughout the temple as Archbishop Daniel invoked the grace of the Holy Spirit upon the candidate.

The sacred moment reached its culmination when Archbishop Daniel laid his hands upon Deacon Basil’s head and proclaimed the words through which the Holy Spirit descends upon the servant of God, transforming him through divine grace for priestly ministry.

Many faithful were moved to tears as the newly ordained priest rose from the altar clothed in the vestments of the Holy Priesthood. The church resounded with the joyful proclamation: “Axios! Axios! Axios!” “He is worthy!”

The cry arose not merely from human approval but as a recognition of God's calling and blessing upon the life of the newly ordained priest.

In his ordination sermon, Archbishop Daniel reflected upon Christ's Beatitudes as the roadmap of priestly ministry.

Addressing the newly ordained priest, he reminded him that priesthood is not about authority but sacrifice; not about being served but serving; not about standing above people but standing among them.

“Today Christ places into your hands not merely responsibilities, but souls,” Archbishop Daniel said.

He compared the ministry of a priest to that of a shepherd leading his flock through the mountains, explaining that people often do not know the path ahead but must be able to recognize the voice of Christ through the ministry of their priest.

The Archbishop further reflected upon the providential connection between the ordination and the children's First Confession.

“Why does Christ ordain priests?” he asked.

“So that children can confess. So that sinners can be forgiven. So that families can receive guidance. So that the sick can be comforted. So that Christ may continue His work through human hands.”

The faithful listened attentively as the Archbishop reminded them that priesthood and repentance are inseparably connected within the life of the Church.

At the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, the newly ordained Father Basil offered heartfelt words of gratitude.

With deep emotion, he thanked Almighty God for His abundant mercy, Archbishop Daniel for his spiritual guidance and confidence, his wife family members for their sacrifices and unwavering support, the clergy mentors, and the faithful whose prayers had accompanied him throughout his journey toward priesthood.

Archbishop Daniel then presented Father Basil with a Certificate of Ordination on behalf of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, commemorating the sacred day on which he was called to serve as a priest of Christ’s Holy Church.

Surrounded by family members, clergy, and faithful, the newly ordained priest bestowed his first priestly blessing upon those gathered. One by one, parishioners approached to receive the blessing of their newly ordained spiritual father, asking for his prayers and offering congratulations.

It was a moving image of the continuity of apostolic ministry: the grace received from Christ through the Apostles being handed from generation to generation within the life of the Orthodox Church.

Following the Divine Liturgy, the faithful gathered for a festive luncheon lovingly prepared by parish volunteers.

The celebration honored both the children who had received the Holy Mystery of Repentance for the first time and the newly ordained Father Basil as he embarked upon his sacred ministry.

The parish hall echoed with joyful conversation, laughter, and thanksgiving as families shared stories, offered congratulations, and reflected upon the blessings of the day.

Children proudly spoke about their First Confession, while parishioners surrounded Father Basil with prayers, words of encouragement, and expressions of love.

The gathering became a living witness to the beauty of parish life - a community united in faith, strengthened through the Holy Mysteries, and renewed through the grace of the Holy Spirit.

As the celebration concluded, hearts were filled with gratitude to Almighty God for allowing the faithful of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish to witness such a remarkable day.

The children had taken their first conscious steps along the path of repentance.

A new priest had been born into the service of Christ’s Holy Church.

And an entire parish had been reminded that God continually pours out His blessings upon those who gather in faith around His Holy Altar.

Indeed, it was a day of extraordinary grace - a day that will long remain engraved in the memory of the faithful of Sts. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Palos Park, Illinois, as a living testimony that the Holy Spirit continues to guide, strengthen, and renew the Church of Christ from generation to generation.

Потрійне Благословення Божої Благодаті:

Перша Свята Сповідь, Рукоположення Нового Священника

та Відновлена Надія в Українській Православній Парафії святих апостолів Петра і Павла

Парафіяльна громада Української Православної Парафії святих апостолів Петра і Павла в Палос-Парку, штат Іллінойс, пережила день особливої духовної радості та подяки, зібравшись разом для святкування того, що Архієпископ Даниїл назвав «потрійним благословенням», дарованим Господом Богом парафіяльній громаді. 

Цей святий день об’єднав три визначні події в житті парафії: Першу Святу Сповідь п’ятнадцяти дітей парафіяльної родини, рукоположення диякона Василія Балке з Денвера, штат Колорадо, у священничий сан та відновлення електропостачання в парафії й навколишній громаді після сильних буревіїв і негоди, що нещодавно вразили околицю Чікаго. 

Коли парафіяни та гості прибували до храму, в повітрі відчувалася особлива атмосфера вдячності та очікування. Лише за кілька годин до початку святкувань було відновлено електропостачання храму та навколишніх районів після масштабних відключень, спричинених потужними грозами, які торкнулися Палос-Парку та сусідніх громад. Повернення електрики та кондиціонування повітря дозволило майже 250 вірним комфортно зібратися в храмі, щоб розділити благословення, які Господь приготував для Свого народу. 

Після прибуття Високопреосвященнішого Архієпископа Даниїла, духовного отця Західної Єпархії Української Православної Церкви США, його тепло зустріли діти, які протягом багатьох місяців готувалися до своєї Першої Святої Сповіді. Юні віряни супроводжували архіпастиря до храму, а їхні обличчя світилися водночас хвилюванням і благоговінням перед подією, яка назавжди залишиться в їхніх серцях. 

Архієпископа зустріли настоятель парафії, всечесний о. Василь Сендега, добродійка Олена Сендкга, члени Парафіяльної Управи, керівники громадського життя та численні вірні, зібрані на молитву. Вітаючи владику, о. Василь висловив вдячність усієї парафіяльної родини за його присутність і молитви за дітей, які готувалися приступити до Святої Тайни Покаяння, а також за диякона Василія, який мав присвятити своє життя служінню Христові та Його Святій Церкві через священниче рукоположення. 

Відповідаючи на щирі слова привітання, Архієпископ Даниїл звернув увагу на особливість цього дня: «Сьогодні ми справді переживаємо потрійне благословення в житті цієї парафіяльної родини. Ми бачимо дітей, які вперше приступають до Святої Тайни Покаяння; стаємо свідками рукоположення нового священника для Христової Церкви; і дякуємо Богові за відновлення електропостачання в громаді після днів випробувань. У всіх цих подіях ми бачимо люблячу руку Божу, яка піклується про Свій народ». 

Разом з Архієпископом Даниїлом співслужили: протоієрей Василь Сендега, настоятель парафії святих апостолів Петра і Павла; протоієрей Говард Слоан із Західної Єпархії УПЦ США; протоієрей Петро Левко, настоятель парафії святого великомученика Юрія Переможця в Ярдвіллі, штат Нью-Джерсі; протодиякон Андрій Фрончак; диякон Василій Балке та духовенство і миряни, які прибули здалека, щоб стати учасниками цієї благословенної події. 

Перша частина святкування була присвячена п’ятнадцятьом дітям парафії, які вперше у своєму житті приступили до Святої Тайни Покаяння та Сповіді. 

Під люблячим духовним проводом свого настоятеля о. Василя Сендеги та добродійки Олени діти пізнавали значення покаяння, прощення та примирення з Богом. Через молитву, навчання та розмови про любов і милосердя Христові вони зрозуміли, що Сповідь - це не мить страху, а священна зустріч із Господом, Який обіймає Своїх дітей співчуттям і благодаттю. 

Коли діти приступали до Тайни Покаяння, багато батьків не могли стримати сліз. Матері й батьки зі зворушенням спостерігали, як їхні сини та доньки роблять важливий крок у своєму духовному житті. Атмосфера храму нагадувала всім присутнім, що Церква продовжує виховувати людські душі від дитинства, провадячи їх до живих стосунків із Господом Ісусом Христом. 

У своїй проповіді Архієпископ Даниїл звернувся як до дітей, так і до всіх вірних, наголошуючи, що Сповідь є мостом, який повертає нас до Бога.

«Бог уже знає все про нас. Він не чекає, щоб покарати нас. Він чекає, щоб обійняти нас. Через Сповідь ми вкладаємо свої серця в Його люблячі руки та отримуємо дар миру». 

Духовною вершиною святкування стала Божественна Літургія, під час якої диякон Василій Балке був покликаний прийняти благодать Святого Священства через покладання рук Архієпископа Даниїла з благословення Високопреосвященнішого Митрополита Антонія, Предстоятеля Української Православної Церкви США. 

Коли диякон Василій наблизився до Святого Престолу, супроводжуваний молитвою та благоговійною тишею, всі присутні усвідомлювали, що стають свідками однієї з найсвятіших митей у житті Церкви. 

Чин рукоположення розгортався з особливою красою та богословською глибиною. Схилившись перед Святим Престолом, диякон Василій цілковито присвятив себе Христові та Його Церкві. Стародавні молитви священничої хіротонії лунали під склепіннями храму, коли Архієпископ Даниїл призивав благодать Святого Духа на кандидата. 

Кульмінацією став момент, коли Архієпископ Даниїл поклав руки на голову диякона Василія та виголосив молитви, через які Святий Дух сходить на слугу Божого, преображаючи його для священничого служіння. 

Багато вірних не стримували сліз, коли новорукоположений священник постав перед ними у священничих ризах. Храм наповнився урочистим вигуком: «Аксіос! Аксіос! Аксіос!»
«Достойний!»

Цей вигук був не лише людським схваленням, а свідченням того, що Господь покликав і благословив нового служителя Свого виноградника. 

У своїй проповіді під час рукоположення Архієпископ Даниїл роздумував над Блаженствами Христовими як дороговказом священничого служіння. Він наголосив, що священство - це не влада, а жертва; не бажання бути обслуговуваним, а готовність служити; не стояти над людьми, а бути серед них. 

«Сьогодні Христос довіряє у твої руки не лише обов’язки, а людські душі», - звернувся владика до новорукоположеного священника. 

Він порівняв служіння священника із служінням пастиря, який веде свою паству через гірські стежки, пояснюючи, що люди не завжди знають шлях уперед, але повинні чути голос Христа через служіння свого душпастиря. 

Архіпастир також підкреслив глибокий зв’язок між рукоположенням і Першою Сповіддю дітей.

«Для чого Христос поставляє священників? Щоб діти могли сповідатися. Щоб грішники могли отримувати прощення. Щоб родини знаходили духовне провідництво. Щоб хворі отримували розраду. Щоб Христос продовжував Своє служіння через людські руки». 

Наприкінці Божественної Літургії новорукоположений отець Василій звернувся до всіх присутніх зі щирими словами подяки. Він подякував Всемогутньому Богові за Його безмежну милість, Архієпископу Даниїлу за духовне наставництво та довіру, своїй дружині, родині, наставникам із числа духовенства та всім вірним, чиї молитви супроводжували його дорогою до священства. 

Архієпископ Даниїл вручив отцю Василію Свідоцтво про Рукоположення від імені Української Православної Церкви США на згадку про день, коли він був покликаний до служіння Христовій Церкві. 

Оточений родиною, духовенством і вірними, новий священник подав своє перше священниче благословення. Один за одним парафіяни підходили до нього, просячи молитов і вітаючи його з початком нового етапу служіння. 

Це була зворушлива ілюстрація безперервності апостольського служіння - благодаті, яка від Христа через Апостолів передається з покоління в покоління у Святій Православній Церкві. 

Після Божественної Літургії всі присутні зібралися на святковий обід, з любов’ю підготовлений парафіяльними волонтерами. Святкування було присвячене як дітям, що вперше приступили до Святої Сповіді, так і новорукоположеному отцю Василію, який розпочав своє священниче служіння. 

Парафіяльна зала наповнилася щирими розмовами, сміхом, словами вдячності та радості. Родини ділилися своїми враженнями, вітали дітей та нового священника, роздумуючи над благословеннями цього незабутнього дня. 

Діти з гордістю говорили про свою Першу Сповідь, а парафіяни оточували отця Василія молитвами, словами підтримки та любові. Усе це стало живим свідченням краси парафіяльного життя - громади, об’єднаної вірою, укріпленої Святими Тайнами та оновленої благодаттю Святого Духа. 

Коли святкування добігло кінця, серця всіх були сповнені вдячності Богові за можливість стати свідками такого благословенного дня.

Діти зробили свої перші свідомі кроки дорогою покаяння.

Новий священник народився для служіння Христовій Церкві.

А вся парафіяльна родина ще раз переконалася, що Господь щедро виливає Свої благословення на тих, хто збирається з вірою довкола Його Святого Престолу. 

Воістину, це був день надзвичайної благодаті - день, який назавжди залишиться в пам’яті вірних Української Православної Парафії святих апостолів Петра і Павла в Палос-Парку як живе свідчення того, що Святий Дух і надалі провадить, укріплює та оновлює Христову Церкву з покоління в покоління.
