On May 25, 2026, the Ukrainian community of France, representatives of the diplomatic corps, clergy, military personnel, and numerous friends of Ukraine gathered in Paris to prayerfully and solemnly commemorate the 100th anniversary of the tragic death of the Chief Otaman of the Armed Forces of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and Head of the Directorate of the UPR, Symon Petliura - a man who dedicated his life to the struggle for the freedom and independence of the Ukrainian State.

It was on May 25, 1926, on Rue Racine in Paris, that a treacherous shot fired by a Bolshevik agent ended the life of one of the most prominent leaders of the Ukrainian liberation movement of the twentieth century. One hundred years later, the name of Symon Petliura remains a living symbol of the indomitable spirit of the Ukrainian people, while his struggle carries profound significance at a time when the Ukrainian nation is once again forced to defend its freedom and European values against Russian aggression.

According to longstanding tradition, precisely at 2:34 PM - the exact moment when the heart of the Otaman ceased to beat - a memorial ceremony began at Montparnasse Cemetery beside his place of eternal rest. This year’s commemoration carried especially deep and emotional meaning, as historical memory intertwined with the present-day struggle of the Ukrainian people for their very existence.

Among those participating in the ceremony were the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to France and Monaco and Permanent Delegate of Ukraine to UNESCO, Vadym Omelchenko; President of the European Congress of Ukrainians Bohdan Raychynets; Director of the Center for East European Studies of Warsaw University Jan Malicki; Colonel of the Polish Army Tadeusz Krząstek; Head of the Ukrainian Studies Center of Warsaw University Iryna Matiash; representatives of the Ukrainian community in France, civic and cultural organizations, members of the diplomatic corps, and servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Especially symbolic was the presence of defenders of the 152nd Separate Jaeger Brigade named after Symon Petliura and soldiers of the “Da Vinci Wolves” unit, who today continue the mission of those who fought for Ukraine’s independence a century ago. Their presence at the grave of the Chief Otaman became a living testimony that the struggle for a free Ukraine continues and that the sacrifice of past heroes inspires new generations of Ukrainian warriors.

The ceremony began with words of remembrance and addresses by representatives of civic, academic, and diplomatic circles. The speeches expressed not only sorrow for the loss of a national leader, but also drew profound historical parallels between the struggle of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and today’s war of liberation against Russian aggression.

Following the addresses, a solemn flower-laying ceremony took place. The grave of Symon Petliura became covered with blue-and-yellow bouquets and wreaths as a sign of gratitude and remembrance from the Ukrainian people, who through decades and across borders continue to honor their heroes.

The next part of the commemoration was a memorial service for the repose of Symon Petliura’s soul. The Panakhyda was led by Archbishop Daniel, spiritual father of the Western European Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the Diaspora, together with Bishop Ihor Rantsya of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Eparchy of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Switzerland, concelebrated by clergy. During the service, prayers were offered for the repose of all fighters for Ukraine’s freedom and for victory and peace for the long-suffering Ukrainian land.

In his remarks, Archbishop Daniel emphasized that the figure of Symon Petliura is not merely a page of history, but a living moral guide for present and future generations of Ukrainians:

“Symon Petliura could be physically killed, but his love for Ukraine and his faith in a free nation could never be destroyed. Today, as Ukrainian soldiers once again stand on the front lines defending freedom, we witness that the idea of an independent Ukraine - for which he lived and died - continues to live in the hearts of millions.”

The ceremony concluded with a collective prayer for Ukraine and the solemn singing of the National Anthem of Ukraine.

Later that evening, the commemorative events continued in the heart of Paris beneath the Arc de Triomphe, where a ceremonial flower-laying took place in honor of the 100th anniversary of Symon Petliura’s death.

The event was led by Ambassador Vadym Omelchenko, Archbishop Daniel, and Bishop Ihor Rantsya. Participating in the ceremony were representatives of the Ukrainian community of France, clergy, veterans, civic and cultural leaders, and members of the diplomatic corps.

Among those present were the president of the Symon Petliura Ukrainian Library, the president of the Union of Ukrainians in France, the president of the Save Ukraine Association, the president of the Institute of International Scientific and Educational Cooperation, the president of the Brotherhood of Saint Symon of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, the head of the Representative Committee of the Ukrainian Community in France (CRCUF), as well as representatives of the Association of Veterans of Paris’s 6th District.

Adding profound symbolism to the ceremony beneath the Arc de Triomphe was the presence of servicemen from the 152nd Separate Jaeger Brigade named after Symon Petliura, who stood beside the battle flag of their brigade - a living continuation of the struggle once led by the Chief Otaman himself.

Participants emphasized that today Ukraine continues the same struggle for freedom, dignity, and the right to exist as an independent nation among the free peoples of the world. The memory of Symon Petliura is not merely a historical remembrance, but a spiritual call to unity, courage, and responsibility before future generations.

One hundred years have passed since his martyrdom, yet the cause for which Symon Petliura lived continues to endure. Today, it is defended by Ukrainian soldiers - the modern knights of Ukraine’s freedom.

У Парижі на кладовищі Монпарнас та під Тріумфальною аркою

вшанували 100-ліття мученицької загибелі Симона Петлюри

25 травня 2026 року українська громада Франції, представники дипломатичного корпусу, духовенство, військовослужбовці та численні друзі України зібралися у Парижі, щоб молитовно та урочисто вшанувати 100-ті роковини від дня трагічної загибелі Головного Отамана військ Української Народної Республіки, Голови Директорії УНР Симона Петлюри - людини, яка присвятила своє життя боротьбі за свободу і незалежність Української держави.

Саме 25 травня 1926 року, на вулиці Расін у Парижі, підступний постріл більшовицького агента обірвав життя одного з найвизначніших провідників українського визвольного руху ХХ століття. Сто років потому ім’я Симона Петлюри залишається живим символом нескореності українського народу, а його боротьба набуває особливого значення в час, коли український народ знову змушений зі зброєю в руках захищати власну свободу та європейські цінності від російської агресії.

За усталеною традицією, рівно о 14:34 - у хвилину, коли перестало битися серце Отамана - на кладовищі Монпарнас розпочалася меморіальна церемонія біля місця його вічного спочинку. Цьогорічні заходи мали особливо глибокий і щемливий характер, адже столітня історична пам’ять тісно переплелася із сучасною боротьбою українського народу за власне існування.

У церемонії взяли участь Надзвичайний і Повноважний Посол України у Франції і Монако, Постійний представник України при ЮНЕСКО Вадим Омельченко, Голова Європейського конгресу українців Богдан Райчинець, директор Центру східноєвропейських студій Варшавського університету Ян Маліцький, полковник Війська Польського Тадеуш Кшонстек, керівниця Центру досліджень України Варшавського університету Ірина Матяш, представники української громади Франції, громадських та культурних організацій, дипломатичного корпусу, а також військовослужбовці Збройних Сил України.

Особливо символічною стала присутність захисників і захисниць 152-ї окремої єгерської бригади імені Симона Петлюри та військовослужбовців підрозділу «Вовки Да Вінчі», які сьогодні продовжують справу тих, хто сто років тому виборював незалежність України. Їхня присутність біля могили Головного Отамана стала живим свідченням того, що боротьба за вільну Україну триває, а жертовність героїв минулого надихає нові покоління українських воїнів.

Церемонія розпочалася зі слів пам’яті та виступів представників громадських, наукових і дипломатичних кіл. У промовах звучали не лише слова скорботи за втраченим державним діячем, але й глибокі історичні паралелі між боротьбою Української Народної Республіки та сучасною визвольною війною України проти російської агресії.

Після цього відбулося урочисте покладання квітів. Могила Симона Петлюри потонула у синьо-жовтих букетах та вінках - як знак вдячності й пам’яті українського народу, який через століття і тисячі кілометрів не забуває своїх героїв.

Наступним складовою заходу стала спільна панахида за упокій душі Симона Петлюри. Заупокійну молитву звершили архієпископ Даниїл - архіпастир Західно-Європейської Єпархії Української Православної Церкви в Діаспорі - та єпископ Ігор Ранця Української Греко-Католицької Єпархії Франції, Бельгії, Нідерландів, Люксембургу та Швейцарії у співслужінні духовенства. Під час молитви лунали прохання до Господа за упокій душ усіх борців за свободу України та за перемогу і мир для багатостраждальної української землі.

У своєму слові архієпископ Даниїл наголосив, що постать Симона Петлюри є не лише сторінкою історії, але живим моральним дороговказом для сучасних поколінь українців:

«Симона Петлюру можна було вбити фізично, але неможливо було знищити його любов до України та віру у вільну державу. Сьогодні, коли українські воїни знову стоять на передовій боротьби за свободу, ми бачимо, що ідея незалежної України, за яку він жив і помер, продовжує жити у серцях мільйонів людей».

Завершилася церемонія спільною молитвою за Україну та урочистим виконанням Державного Гімну України.

Увечері того ж дня пам’ятні заходи продовжилися у самому серці Парижа - під Тріумфальною аркою, де відбулася урочиста церемонія покладання квітів з нагоди 100-х роковин загибелі Симона Петлюри.

Захід очолили Посол України у Франції Вадим Омельченко, архієпископ Даниїл та єпископ Ігор Ранця. Участь у церемонії взяли представники української громади Франції, духовенство, ветерани, громадські й культурні діячі, а також представники дипломатичного корпусу.

Серед присутніх були президентка Української бібліотеки імені Симона Петлюри, президент Союзу українців Франції, президентка асоціації Save Ukraine, президентка Інституту міжнародного науково-освітнього співробітництва, президентка Братства Святого Симона Української Православної Церкви Діаспори, голова Репрезентативного комітету української громади у Франції (CRCUF), а також представники Об’єднання ветеранів Парижа 6-го округу.

Особливого символізму церемонії під Тріумфальною аркою надала присутність військовослужбовців 152-ї окремої єгерської бригади імені Симона Петлюри, які стояли поруч із бойовим прапором свого підрозділу - як живе продовження боротьби, яку сто років тому вів Головний Отаман.

Учасники заходу наголосили, що сьогодні Україна продовжує ту саму боротьбу за свободу, гідність і право бути незалежною державою серед вільних народів світу. Пам’ять про Симона Петлюру є не лише історичним спомином, але духовним закликом до єдності, мужності та відповідальності перед майбутніми поколіннями.

Сто років минуло від дня його мученицької смерті, але справа, за яку жив Симон Петлюра, продовжує жити. І сьогодні її захищають українські воїни - новітні лицарі свободи України.
