In the quiet yet deeply prayerful setting of St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church in South Bound Brook, New Jersey, the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America gathered with hearts lifted in hope and humility to offer the Akathist Service to the Most Holy Theotokos “Pantanassa” - the Queen of All, the Healer of those afflicted with cancer and grave illness.

Presided over by His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, and concelebrated by Rev. Fr. Vasyl Pasakas, pastor of St. Andrew Memorial Church, together with Rev. Fr. Ivan Tchopko of the Three Holy Hierarchs Chapel of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary, the sacred service became not merely a liturgical act, but a living encounter with the mercy of God. The seminarians of St. Sophia Seminary, under the direction of Reader Marian Meleshko, offered prayerful responses, while Deacon Andrii Akulenko, Subdeacon Mykola Stefanyk, and Subdeacon Yaroslav Bilohan reverently assisted, embodying the unity of prayer across generations of the Church.

Yet at the heart of this sacred gathering stood the icon of the Mother of God “Pantanassa.”

The original icon of the Most Holy Theotokos “Pantanassa” is preserved on the Holy Mountain of Athos, at the Monastery of Vatopedi - one of the ancient spiritual centers of Orthodox monasticism. The name “Pantanassa” means “Queen of All,” and through the centuries, countless faithful have come before this icon seeking healing - especially from cancer and life-threatening illnesses.

The icon became widely known for its miraculous intercessions when individuals suffering from terminal diseases experienced unexpected healing, not only of the body but also of the soul. It is not magic, nor superstition, but rather the manifestation of the deep truth of our faith: that the Mother of God, standing at the throne of her Son, intercedes for humanity with boundless compassion.

As Archbishop Daniel reflected during the service: “Before this sacred image, we are reminded that illness is not only a physical reality - it is also a spiritual journey. And in that journey, the Theotokos stands beside us, not as a distant figure, but as a Mother who suffers with her children and leads them to the healing grace of her Son.”

Five years ago, during the Clergy-Laity Conference (Sobor) of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, a profound spiritual initiative was born. Through the generosity of the Guradian of Metropolia and Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate Mr. Howard West and his wife Linda, and with the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, a faithful reproduction of the icon of the Mother of God “Pantanassa” was prepared and distributed to parishes across the nation.

This was not simply the sharing of an image - it was the establishment of a ministry.

Each parish was entrusted with the sacred responsibility to gather monthly, on the first Thursday, to serve the Akathist to the Mother of God Pantanassa, praying specifically for those who suffer from cancer and other grave illnesses. In doing so, the Church fulfills her calling to be a spiritual hospital - a place where wounds are not hidden, but brought into the light of Christ.

“When the Church prays,” Archbishop Daniel reminded the faithful, “she does not merely ask for miracles - she becomes the place where miracles are born through faith, compassion, and communion with God.”

In his homily, Archbishop Daniel shared a deeply personal reflection from his pilgrimage to Mount Athos earlier this year, where he, together with clergy of the Church, stood before the original icon of Pantanassa at Vatopedi Monastery.

He described the stillness of the katholikon, the flickering candlelight, and the profound silence that seemed to carry centuries of prayer.

“Standing before the original icon,” he shared, “one realizes how small human strength truly is… and yet, how infinite God’s mercy becomes when we surrender to Him. There, before the Pantanassa, I prayed not only for healing of the body, but for the healing of hearts - for those who suffer, for those who care for them, and for all of us who struggle to understand the mystery of pain.”

He continued with a powerful spiritual truth: “When human efforts fail - when medicine reaches its limits, when strength is exhausted, when fear overwhelms - that is precisely where the mercy of God begins to act. The Theotokos leads us to that moment of surrender, where healing becomes possible in ways we cannot comprehend.”

The Akathist service to the Mother of God Pantanassa invites us to reflect more deeply on what it truly means to be healed.

Healing is not always the immediate removal of illness. It is the restoration of hope. It is the strengthening of the soul. It is the quiet assurance that even in suffering, we are not abandoned.

The Fathers of the Church remind us: “God does not always remove the burden, but He always strengthens the one who carries it.”

And in the presence of the Pantanassa, this truth becomes tangible.

We see families gathered in prayer for loved ones. We hear names spoken softly - names of those fighting cancer, names of those who feel alone. We witness tears, but also faith. And in that sacred space, something begins to change.

“Prayer before the icon of the Mother of God,” Archbishop Daniel reflected, “is not an escape from reality - it is an entrance into divine reality, where God meets us exactly as we are and begins to transform our suffering into a path toward eternal life.”

The monthly Akathist to the Mother of God Pantanassa, served in parishes across the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, stands as a testimony to the living faith of the Church.

It is a reminder that we are called not only to believe, but to pray - not only to pray, but to accompany - not only to accompany, but to love.

Every name commemorated, every candle lit, every tear shed becomes part of a greater offering - a living prayer rising before the throne of God.

And as the faithful departed from St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church, there remained a quiet but powerful certainty: That no illness, no suffering, no fear is beyond the reach of God’s mercy. That the Mother of God, the Pantanassa, continues to intercede.

And that healing - in its deepest and most eternal sense - is already at work among us.

У тиші, сповненій глибокої молитви, в Українській Православній церкві-памʼятнику Святого Андрія Первозванного в Саут-Баунд-Брук, штат Нью-Джерзі, вірні Української Православної Церкви США зібралися з піднесеними серцями, сповненими надії та смирення, щоб звершити Акафіст до Пресвятої Богородиці “Пантанасси” – Всецариці - Цілительки тих, хто страждає від раку та тяжких недуг.

Богослужіння очолив Його Високопреосвященство Архієпископ Даниїл у співслужінні з прот. Василем Пасакасом, настоятелем храму, разом із о. Іваном Чопком із каплиці Трьох Святителів при Свято-Софіївській Українській Православній Богословській Семінарії. Це священне богослужіння стало не лише літургійною дією, але й живою зустріччю з милосердям Божим. Семінаристи Свято-Софіївської семінарії під керівництвом читця Мар’яна Мелешка молитовно співали, а диякон Андрій Акуленко, іподиякон Микола Стефаник та іподиякон Ярослав Білоган благоговійно прислуговували, виявляючи єдність молитви різних поколінь Церкви.

У центрі цього молитовного зібрання перебувала ікона Божої Матері “Пантанасса”.

Оригінал цієї святої ікони зберігається на Святій Горі Афон, у монастирі Ватопед - одному з найдавніших духовних осередків православного чернецтва. Назва “Пантанасса” означає “Всецариця”, і протягом століть незліченна кількість вірних приходила перед цією ікону, шукаючи зцілення - особливо від онкологічних та смертельно небезпечних хвороб.

Ікона стала широко відомою завдяки численним чудесним заступництвам, коли люди, що страждали від невиліковних недуг, отримували несподіване зцілення - не лише тілесне, але й духовне. Це не магія і не забобони, а вияв глибокої істини нашої віри: Божа Матір, стоячи перед престолом Свого Сина, з безмежним співчуттям заступається за людство.

Як зазначив Архієпископ Даниїл у своїй проповіді: «Перед цим святим образом ми усвідомлюємо, що хвороба - це не лише фізична реальність, але й духовна подорож. І в цій подорожі Богородиця стоїть поруч із нами не як далека постать, але як Мати, Яка страждає разом зі Своїми дітьми і веде їх до зцілюючої благодаті Свого Сина».

П’ять років тому, під час Собору духовенства і мирян Української Православної Церкви США, народилася глибока духовна ініціатива. Завдяки жертовній щедрості Опікуна Митрополії та архонта Вселенського Патріархату п. Говарда Веста та його дружини Лінди, з благословення Його Високопреосвященства Митрополита Антонія було створено точну копію ікони Божої Матері “Пантанасса” та передано парафіям по всій країні.

Це було не просто поширення ікони - це стало заснуванням цілого служіння.

Кожній парафії було доручено священний обов’язок щомісяця, у перший четвер, звершувати Акафіст до Божої Матері Пантанасси, особливо молячись за тих, хто страждає від раку та тяжких захворювань. Таким чином Церква виконує своє покликання бути духовною лікарнею - місцем, де рани не приховуються, а приносяться до світла Христового.

«Коли Церква молиться, - наголосив Архієпископ Даниїл, - вона не лише просить про чудо, але стає місцем, де чудеса народжуються через віру, співчуття та єднання з Богом».

У своїй проповіді Архієпископ Даниїл поділився глибоко особистим пережиттям паломництва на Святу Гору Афон, де він разом із духовенством стояв перед оригінальною іконою Пантанасси у Ватопедському монастирі.

Він описав тишу кафолікону, мерехтіння свічок і глибоку мовчанку, що ніби вміщала в собі століття молитви.

«Стоячи перед оригінальною іконою, - поділився він, - усвідомлюєш, наскільки малою є людська сила… і водночас - наскільки безмежним є милосердя Боже, коли ми віддаємо себе Йому. Там, перед Пантанассою, я молився не лише за зцілення тіла, але й за зцілення сердець - тих, хто страждає, тих, хто піклується про них, і всіх нас, хто намагається зрозуміти таємницю страждання».

Він продовжив глибокою духовною думкою: «Коли людські зусилля вичерпуються - коли медицина доходить до межі, коли сили згасають, коли страх охоплює - саме тоді починає діяти милосердя Боже. Богородиця веде нас до цього моменту довіри, де зцілення стає можливим у спосіб, який ми не здатні осягнути».

Акафіст до Божої Матері Пантанасси запрошує нас глибше замислитися над тим, що означає справжнє зцілення.

Зцілення - це не завжди негайне усунення хвороби. Це відновлення надії. Це укріплення душі. Це тихе усвідомлення, що навіть у стражданні ми не залишені.

Святі Отці нагадують нам: «Бог не завжди забирає тягар, але завжди укріплює того, хто його несе» (свт. Іоан Золотоустий)

І в присутності Пантанасси ця істина стає відчутною.

Ми бачимо родини, що моляться за своїх близьких. Чуємо імена, вимовлені пошепки - імена тих, хто бореться з хворобою, і тих, хто почувається самотнім. Ми бачимо сльози, але також і віру. І в цьому святому просторі щось починає змінюватися.

«Молитва перед іконою Божої Матері, - зауважив Архієпископ Даниїл, - це не втеча від реальності, а входження у Божу реальність, де Господь зустрічає нас такими, якими ми є, і починає преображати наше страждання у шлях до вічного життя».

Щомісячний Акафіст до Божої Матері Пантанасси, який звершується в парафіях Української Православної Церкви США, є живим свідченням віри Церкви.

Це нагадування про те, що ми покликані не лише вірити, але й молитися - не лише молитися, але й супроводжувати - не лише супроводжувати, але й любити.

Кожне ім’я, кожна запалена свічка, кожна сльоза стають частиною великої жертви - живої молитви, що підноситься перед престолом Божим.

І коли вірні виходили зі Свято-Андріївського храму, у серцях залишалася тиха, але глибока впевненість: Що жодна хвороба, жодне страждання, жоден страх не є поза межами Божого милосердя.

Що Божа Матір - Пантанасса - продовжує заступатися за нас. І що зцілення - у найглибшому і вічному значенні - вже звершується серед нас.
