With hearts uplifted in prayer and thanksgiving, the faithful of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos Ukrainian Orthodox Mission in Charlotte, North Carolina, welcomed their archpastor, His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, for a sacred and joy-filled parish visitation. This visit carried special meaning, marking nearly one year since the appointment of their devoted pastor, Rev. Fr. Maksym Zhuravchyk, who continues to shepherd the growing mission community with love, humility, and dedication.

Established in honor of the great Feast of the Annunciation, the mission gathered clothed in the radiant blue vestments of the Theotokos - a visible reminder of purity, obedience, and heavenly calling. As Archbishop Daniel entered the holy temple, he was greeted not only by clergy and faithful, but by the vibrant presence of the parish youth. With heartfelt Ukrainian poetry and a beautifully woven wreath, the children welcomed their archpastor, offering a living testimony that the future of the Church is rooted in faith, culture, and the sacred continuity of generations.

Joining in prayerful concelebration with the archpastor was Rev. Fr. James Falcone, Chaplain of the United States Army, who, during his visit to the Charlotte area, came to pray alongside the faithful of the mission and partake in the celebration of the Divine Liturgy. His presence served as a reminder of the ministry of the Church beyond parish walls - bringing Christ to those who serve, protect, and often endure unseen struggles. In a spirit of unity and shared service, clergy stood together at the Holy Altar, offering prayers for peace, for the armed forces, and for all those suffering throughout the world.

With the words of welcome, Sisterhood President Mrs. Luydmyla Melnychenko and Parish Council President Mr. Petro Melnychenko presented the Archbishop with the traditional bread and salt. Yet, as reflected during the presentation, this offering transcended custom - it became a spiritual proclamation. The bread symbolized Christ Himself, “the Bread of Life,” offered freely for the salvation of the world, while the salt represented the call of every Christian to preserve truth, to bring flavor to a world often dulled by indifference, and to remain steadfast in faith amid trials. Accompanied by a bouquet of flowers, this offering expressed not only hospitality, but profound love, gratitude, and reverence for the archpastoral presence among them.

Greeting his archpastor, Fr. Maksym Zhuravchyk proclaimed with joy: “Blessed is He who comes in the Name of the Lord! Your Eminence, you come to us not only as a hierarch, but as a father in Christ, a guide, and a living witness of God’s love. We thank you for your trust, your prayers, and your unwavering support of our mission community.”

In a moving expression of filial love, Fr. Maksym presented Archbishop Daniel with a hand cross, a symbol of pastoral unity and shared responsibility in bearing the Cross of Christ for the salvation of souls. Receiving it with humility, Archbishop Daniel blessed the faithful and entered the temple, lifting prayers not only for the mission community but also for the suffering people of Ukraine, imploring God’s mercy and peace amid the ongoing war.

The Divine Liturgy that followed was profoundly prayerful and spiritually enriching, adorned by the heartfelt chanting of the parish choir under the direction of Maria Grekh. Many of the faithful, having prepared themselves through the Holy Mystery of Confession - faithfully administered by Fr. Maksym throughout the service - approached the Chalice with reverence, receiving the Most Holy Body and Blood of our Lord from the hands of their archpastor.

In his homily, Archbishop Daniel offered a deeply theological and pastoral reflection, weaving together the luminous example of the Most Holy Theotokos, the witness of Saint Mary of Egypt, and the Gospel call to sacrificial discipleship:

“The Feast of the Annunciation reveals to us a mystery that transcends time and speaks directly into the reality of our daily lives. A young girl - unknown to the world, yet known fully to God -stands before the Archangel Gabriel. She is not powerful by worldly standards, nor surrounded by earthly glory. And yet, in her humility, she becomes the dwelling place of the Most High. Why? Because she says ‘yes.’

This ‘yes’ is not passive - it is courageous. It is not convenient - it is sacrificial. The Theotokos teaches us that the greatest strength of the human person is found not in control, but in surrender to the will of God.

And then, the Church places before us another image - Saint Mary of Egypt. A life once lost in sin becomes, through repentance, a life radiant with holiness. She reminds us that no distance from God is too great, no darkness too deep, if only we turn back with sincerity of heart.

Between these two women - the purity of the Theotokos and the repentance of Saint Mary - we find ourselves. Some of us are called to preserve the grace we have received; others are called to rediscover it through repentance. But all of us are called to respond.

As we approach the Fifth Sunday of Great Lent, the Gospel reminds us that following Christ means walking His path - the path of humility, sacrifice, and love. ‘Whoever desires to be first, let him be last of all and servant of all.’ This is not simply a teaching - it is a way of life.

If we wish to share in His Resurrection, we must not be afraid to carry His Cross. And the Cross is not only suffering - it is also love in action. It is forgiveness when it is difficult. It is compassion when it is inconvenient. It is faith when the world around us trembles.

Today, as we gather in this holy temple, let us ask ourselves: What is my ‘yes’ to God? Where is He calling me to serve? And how can I, in my own life, become a witness of His presence in the world?”

Following the Divine Liturgy, the community gathered for a commemorative photo and a festive Lenten meal, prepared with love by the faithful in honor of the parish feast day. The luncheon became a continuation of the spiritual celebration - a time of fellowship, reflection, and dialogue. During an engaging question-and-answer session, Archbishop Daniel spoke about the deeper meaning of Great Lent, the transformative power of Pascha, and the importance of building a parish life rooted in love, peace, and active service.

In his closing words, Fr. Maksym expressed heartfelt gratitude: “Your Eminence, your visit strengthens us, inspires us, and reminds us that we are not alone. With your prayers and guidance, we continue to grow - not only as a parish, but as a family in Christ.”

Archbishop Daniel, in turn, offered words of encouragement and hope: “This mission is not simply a place - it is a living witness of faith. What you are building here is sacred. Through your love, your sacrifices, and your unity, Christ is present among you. Continue to serve one another, and through this service, reveal the Kingdom of God to the world.”

As the faithful departed, their hearts were filled with renewed strength and spiritual joy. The visit of their archpastor became not merely an event, but a moment of grace - a reminder that in the life of the Church, every prayer, every act of love, and every step of faith draws us closer to the eternal reality of God’s presence.

May the Most Holy Theotokos guide this mission. May Saint Mary of Egypt inspire repentance and renewal. And may the light of Christ continue to shine brightly in the hearts of the faithful in Charlotte and beyond.

“Так”, що спасло світ, і покаяння, що оновило душу:

Благовіщення Пресвятої Богородиці та П’ята неділя Великого посту з архієпископом Даниїлом

З піднесеними у молитві та вдячності серцями вірні Місії Благовіщення Пресвятої Богородиці Української Православної Церкви в Шарлотті, штат Північна Кароліна, вітали свого архіпастиря, Високопреосвященнішого Архієпископа Даниїла, під час благословенного та сповненого радості архіпастирського візиту. Цей приїзд мав особливе значення, адже знаменував майже рік від часу призначення їхнього настоятеля - о. Максима Журавчика, який з любов’ю, смиренням і ревністю звершує своє служіння для зростаючої місійної громади. 

Заснована на честь великого свята Благовіщення, місія зібралася у сяйві блакитних риз - кольору Пресвятої Богородиці, що є видимим знаком чистоти, послуху та небесного покликання. Коли Архієпископ Даниїл увійшов до храму, його зустріли не лише духовенство і вірні, але й молодь парафії. Зворушливі українські вірші та сплетений вінок стали щирим виявом любові, свідченням того, що майбутнє Церкви вкорінене у вірі, культурі та священній тяглості поколінь.

У молитві разом із архіпастирем співслужив преподобний о. Джеймс Фалконе, капелан Збройних Сил США, який під час свого перебування у Шарлотті долучився до спільної молитви та звершення Божественної Літургії. Його присутність стала свідченням про служіння Церкви поза межами парафій - там, де люди служать, захищають і часто несуть невидимі випробування. У дусі єдності духовенство разом підносило молитви за мир, за військовослужбовців і за всіх, хто страждає у світі.

Зі словами привітання голова сестрицтва пані Людмила Мельниченко та голова парафіяльної ради пан Петро Мельниченко піднесли архіпастирю традиційний хліб і сіль. Однак цей дар перевищував звичайну традицію - він став духовним символом. Хліб уособлював Самого Христа - «Хліб Життя», дарований для спасіння світу, а сіль - покликання кожного християнина зберігати істину, надавати смак життю та залишатися вірним у випробуваннях. Разом із букетом квітів цей дар виражав любов, вдячність і глибоку пошану до архіпастиря.

Вітаючи архіпастиря, о. Максим Журавчик виголосив: «Благословен, хто йде в ім’я Господнє! Ваше Високопреосвященство, Ви приходите до нас не лише як архієрей, але як духовний батько, наставник і живе свідчення Божої любові. Дякуємо за довіру, молитви і невпинну підтримку нашої громади».

На знак синівської любові о. Максим підніс Архієпископу Даниїлу напрестольний хрест як символ єдності у пастирському служінні та спільного несення Хреста Христового. Прийнявши його зі смиренням, Архієпископ благословив вірних і увійшов до храму, підносячи молитви не лише за громаду, але й за народ України, який страждає від війни.

Божественна Літургія була глибоко молитовною та духовно насиченою, прикрашеною співом парафіяльного хору під керівництвом Марії Грех. Багато вірних, приготувавшись через Святу Тайну Сповіді, яку звершував о. Максим, приступили до Чаші, приймаючи Пречисті Тіло і Кров Христові з рук свого архіпастиря.

У своїй проповіді Архієпископ Даниїл розкрив глибокий духовний зміст свята Благовіщення та приклад преподобної Марії Єгипетської: «Свято Благовіщення відкриває перед нами таємницю, що виходить за межі часу і торкається нашого життя. Молода дівчина, невідома світові, але знана Богові, стоїть перед Архангелом Гавриїлом. Вона не має земної слави, але через своє смирення стає оселею Всевишнього - бо сказала “так”.

Це “так” - не пасивне, а мужнє; не зручне, а жертовне. Богородиця навчає нас, що справжня сила людини полягає у відданні себе волі Божій.

І поруч із нею Церква ставить перед нами інший образ - Марія Єгипетська. Життя, загублене в гріху, через покаяння стає святим. Вона нагадує, що жодна відстань від Бога не є надто великою, якщо серце щиро повертається до Нього.

Між цими двома образами - чистотою Богородиці і покаянням Марії - знаходимо себе і ми. Хтось покликаний зберегти благодать, інший - віднайти її через покаяння. Але всі ми покликані відповісти Богові.

Наближаючись до П’ятої неділі Великого посту, ми чуємо: хто хоче бути першим - нехай буде слугою всім. Якщо бажаємо розділити Воскресіння Христове, не біймося нести Його Хрест. Бо Хрест - це не лише страждання, але й любов у дії: прощення, співчуття і віра навіть тоді, коли світ коливається.

Тож запитаймо себе: яке моє “так” Богові? Де Він кличе мене служити? І як я можу стати свідком Його присутності у світі?»

Після Літургії вірні зібралися на спільну фотографію та святкову пісну трапезу. Під час зустрічі відбулося жваве спілкування, під час якого Архієпископ відповідав на запитання про Великий піст, Пасху та життя парафії.

На завершення о. Максим сказав: «Ваше Високопреосвященство, Ваш візит зміцнює нас і надихає. Ми відчуваємо, що не самі. З Вашими молитвами ми зростаємо як духовна родина».

Архієпископ Даниїл відповів: «Ця місія - це живе свідчення віри. Те, що ви будуєте, є святим. Через вашу любов і єдність Христос перебуває серед вас. Продовжуйте служити один одному і через це відкривати Царство Боже світові».

З наповненими радістю серцями вірні поверталися додому, несучи із собою духовне оновлення. Архіпастирський візит став моментом благодаті - нагадуванням, що кожна молитва і кожен акт любові наближає нас до Божої присутності.

Нехай Пресвята Богородиця провадить цю громаду, преподобна Марія Єгипетська надихає до покаяння, а світло Христове сяє у серцях вірних у Шарлотті та по всьому світу.
