They looked death in the face… while we so often see only a stream of headlines.

On this day, the mission of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America led us not to the front lines - but to a place where the silence speaks louder than explosions: a hospital in the heart of suffering.

There, in the wards of the Dnipro Regional Clinical Hospital named after Mechnikov, lie the defenders of Ukraine - those who only yesterday held weapons in their hands, and today hold onto life itself.

Through the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, and with the sacrificial cooperation of Fr. Serhii Kramarenko of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, the Church continues her sacred ministry of presence - bringing not only aid, but love.

Thanks to the compassion of faithful supporters and benefactors, the delegation arrived not empty-handed. Nutritional support - simple items such as yogurts, sweets, and essential nourishment - was delivered to the wounded. Yet what may appear as small offerings became, for those suffering, a breath of light in the midst of darkness.

This sacred mission in the Donbas region is not simply humanitarian - it is deeply Eucharistic in its essence. It is the offering of self for the life of another.

Through the tireless pastoral care of Fr. Serhii Kramarenko, the ministry of Christ’s love is brought directly into the wounds of war.

As Fr. Serhii reflects: “When we come to them, we do not bring only food - we bring the reminder that God has not abandoned them. Even in pain, even in brokenness - Christ is there, suffering with them.”

“The greatest healing begins not with medicine, but with the knowledge that someone still cares, still remembers, still loves.”

Because we cannot fully comprehend what they have endured. They have seen what no human being should see: the death of brothers-in-arms, shattered bodies, pain beyond words.

And after all of this - they lie in hospital beds, learning again how to live. To walk again. To breathe again. To believe again. And perhaps the most painful truth of all - they do not lack only medicine… they long for the assurance that they are not forgotten.

And so - the Church is there. And will remain there.

Reflecting upon this encounter, Archbishop Daniel of the UOC of the USA offers a deeply personal and spiritual appeal: “They stood between life and death so that the sky above us could remain open. Now it is our sacred duty to stand beside them - so they do not feel abandoned beneath that same sky.”

“We often measure life by what we possess - but in the face of suffering, we rediscover that even a cup of yogurt, a gentle word, a moment of presence becomes a gift of eternity.”

“The Church does not go where it is comfortable - the Church goes where Christ is crucified today. And today, He is found in the wounded, the broken, and the forgotten.”

“If we fail to see them - not only with our eyes, but with our hearts - then we risk losing our own humanity.”

We humbly call upon all faithful, all people of goodwill, all who believe in the dignity of human life: Do not remain indifferent.

Soon, the mission of these soldiers will continue - back toward the front lines. There, once again, they are waiting. Waiting for help. Waiting for support. Waiting for us.

This is not someone else’s story. This is our shared responsibility.

Even the smallest offering becomes a great act of love. Because while they hold the sky above us - we must hold them.

Вони дивилися смерті в обличчя… тоді як ми так часто бачимо лише стрічку новин.

Цього дня місія Української Православної Церкви Сполучених Штатів Америки привела нас не на передову - а туди, де тиша промовляє гучніше за вибухи: до лікарні в самому серці страждання.

Там, у палатах Дніпровської обласної клінічної лікарні імені Мечникова, лежать захисники України - ті, хто ще вчора тримав у руках зброю, а сьогодні тримаються за саме життя.

З благословення Його Високопреосвященства Митрополита Антонія, Предстоятеля Української Православної Церкви США, та за жертовної співпраці отця Сергія Крамаренка з Православної Церкви України, Церква продовжує своє священне служіння присутності - приносячи не лише допомогу, але й любов.

Завдяки співчуттю вірних добродійників і благодійників, делегація прибула не з порожніми руками. Харчову підтримку - прості речі, такі як йогурти, солодощі та необхідне харчування - було передано пораненим. І те, що здається малим, стало для тих, хто страждає, ковтком світла серед темряви.

Ця священна місія на Донбасі є не лише гуманітарною - вона глибоко євхаристійна за своєю суттю. Це жертва себе заради життя іншого.

Через невтомну пастирську опіку отця Сергія Крамаренка служіння Христової любові безпосередньо торкається ран війни.

Як зазначає отець Сергій: «Коли ми приходимо до них, ми приносимо не лише їжу - ми приносимо нагадування, що Бог їх не залишив. Навіть у болю, навіть у зламаності - Христос там, страждає разом із ними».

«Найбільше зцілення починається не з ліків, а з усвідомлення, що хтось і далі турбується, пам’ятає і любить».

Бо ми не можемо до кінця осягнути, через що вони пройшли. Вони бачили те, що не повинна бачити людина: смерть побратимів, розірвані тіла, біль, який неможливо передати словами.

І після всього цього - вони лежать у лікарняних палатах, навчаючись знову жити. Знову ходити. Знову дихати. Знову вірити.

І, можливо, найболючіша правда з усіх - їм бракує не лише ліків… їм бракує відчуття, що вони не забуті. І тому - Церква поруч. І залишатиметься поруч.

Роздумуючи над цією зустріччю, архієпископ Даниїл Української Православної Церкви США звертається з глибоким особистим і духовним закликом: «Вони стояли між життям і смертю, щоб небо над нами залишалося відкритим. Тепер наш священний обов’язок - стояти поруч із ними, щоб вони не почувалися покинутими під цим самим небом».

«Ми часто вимірюємо життя тим, що маємо - але перед обличчям страждання відкриваємо, що навіть чашка йогурту, добре слово чи проста присутність стають даром вічності».

«Церква не йде туди, де зручно - Церква йде туди, де сьогодні розпинається Христос. І сьогодні Він - серед поранених, зламаних і забутих».

«Якщо ми не навчимося бачити їх - не лише очима, але й серцем - ми ризикуємо втратити власну людяність».

Ми смиренно закликаємо всіх вірних, усіх людей доброї волі, усіх, хто вірить у гідність людського життя: не залишайтеся осторонь.

Невдовзі місія цих воїнів продовжиться - знову на передову. І там знову чекають. Чекають допомоги. Чекають підтримки. Чекають на нас.

Це не чиясь чужа історія. Це наша спільна відповідальність.

Навіть найменший внесок стає великим актом любові. Бо поки вони тримають небо над нами - ми маємо тримати їх.
