The history of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA continues to be written not only in the chronicles of past generations, but in the living testimony of new communities, new missions, and new chapters of faith. On a sunny fall day (October 5, 2025) in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - the historic “City of Brotherly Love” - the faithful gathered in thanksgiving to God for the establishment of a new spiritual home: the Holy Great-Martyr George Ukrainian Orthodox Mission.

This day will forever be remembered as a moment of grace, joy, and profound renewal. With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the UOC of the USA, and with the fatherly presence of His Eminence Archbishop Daniel, the Mission was officially welcomed into the embrace of the greater spiritual family of our Church.

The celebration began with a moving expression of Ukrainian tradition. At the very doors of the temporary worship space - Bethesda Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia - the children of the Mission stood in reverence to welcome their spiritual father. With radiant smiles and hearts filled with anticipation, they recited heartfelt Ukrainian poetry, embodying the voice of the new generation who will carry the faith forward.

They offered bread and flowers to the Archbishop - bread symbolizing sustenance, life, and the eternal Eucharist, and flowers representing joy, beauty, and the fragrance of Christ’s love. This ancient custom of Ukrainian hospitality transformed the simple entrance of the Archbishop into a sacred rite of unity between shepherd and flock.

The Very Rev. Fr. Volodymyr Steblyna, pastor of the Mission, humbly welcomed Archbishop Daniel, leading him into the church with love and gratitude. His words reflected not only the joy of his parishioners but also their deep hope: that this young Mission might become a flourishing vineyard of Christ within the garden of the Church.

The highlight of the day was the celebration of the Divine Liturgy. With prayerful dignity and fatherly love, Archbishop Daniel presided, joined by concelebrating clergy: Very Rev. Fr. Volodymyr Steblyna, pastor of the Mission; Very Rev. Fr. Petro Levko, pastor of St. George Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Yardville, NJ; Very Rev. Fr. Petro Steblyna, pastor of Holy Archangel Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Mission in Palatine, IL.

The altar was served by seminarians of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary, a living reminder that the present and future of the Church are intertwined through the formation of young clergy. Liturgical responses were beautifully offered by a quartet of graduates from the Kyiv Theological Academy, now residing in Philadelphia. Their voices filled the space with sacred harmony, lifting hearts to heaven and bringing a touch of Ukraine’s spiritual soul into the American sanctuary.

The faithful, united in one body, approached the Holy Chalice in great numbers - a visible testimony that the Eucharist is the center of Christian life, the fountain of renewal, and the heartbeat of every parish.

The Gospel reading of the day (Matthew 15:21–28) recounted the story of the Canaanite woman who, despite rejection, persevered in her plea for Christ to heal her daughter. In this passage, Archbishop Daniel found a timeless lesson: true faith perseveres, humbles itself, and overcomes every obstacle.

With pastoral wisdom, he drew a parallel between the Gospel and our modern struggles. He recalled the story of Mahatma Gandhi, who once sought Christ but was turned away from a Christian church because of divisions and prejudice. Gandhi later concluded that he admired Christ, but not always His followers. Archbishop Daniel challenged the faithful to never allow such barriers of pride, exclusivity, or indifference to infect the Body of Christ.

“The Church must be,” he declared, “a place where all are welcomed, embraced, and healed. In our parishes, we must never look upon one another as strangers or outsiders, but as beloved children of God.”

His words struck deeply, reminding the faithful that the true victory of St. George - the patron of the Mission - is not only a victory over external enemies, but a victory over the inner dragons of prejudice, apathy, and spiritual blindness.

The liturgy was also imbued with profound intercession. Archbishop Daniel and Fr. Volodymyr Steblyna called upon the faithful to unite their hearts in prayer for the suffering people of Ukraine – for the soldiers defending their homeland, for the men and women languishing in captivity, for the displaced families searching for safety, and for the wounded who carry visible and invisible scars of war.

In a moving moment, a Ukrainian soldier, Ihor Kozak, currently undergoing medical treatment, was welcomed into the parish family with the embrace of the Archbishop. His presence reminded all that the Church is not distant from the battlefield, but intimately united with its defenders.

On this same day, the world marked International Teachers’ Day. Archbishop Daniel emphasized that every vocation - whether soldier, priest, doctor, or civic leader - begins with the foundational influence of a teacher. He offered gratitude to all educators present and spoke tenderly of his own mother, herself a teacher, whose patience, wisdom, and dedication shaped his path. “Without good teachers,” he said, “we cannot have good soldiers, good priests, good doctors, or good leaders. Teachers plant the seeds of virtue, knowledge, and faith.”

At the conclusion of the Liturgy, Archbishop Daniel blessed two sacred icons created by Elizabeth Symonenko, specifically prepared for the Mission community. These icons, radiant with beauty and meaning, became spiritual windows opening the Mission to the eternal presence of Christ and His saints.

In a solemn moment, the Archbishop presented Fr. Volodymyr Steblyna with the Certificate of Incorporation, formally welcoming St. George Mission into the canonical and spiritual life of the UOC of the USA. The faithful responded with joy, and in gratitude they presented their Archbishop with a memorial gift, commemorating his first visit and establishing a bond of spiritual kinship that will last for generations.

The day concluded with photographs that captured smiles, embraces, and the glow of a community that had just taken its first steps into a new future. Afterwards, all gathered for a celebratory luncheon in the parish hall, where laughter and conversation flowed as abundantly as the food. The meal was not simply an occasion to eat together, but a continuation of the Eucharist - an extension of communion into fellowship, love, and joy.

Thus began the first day of a new dimension in the life of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. The St. George the Victorious Ukrainian Orthodox Mission of Philadelphia was not only established as a new parish community, but as a living testament to the Church’s vitality, resilience, and faith.

The story of St. George is one of courage, faith, and triumph over evil. Today, that story is rewritten in Philadelphia – not on the battlefield of swords, but in the battlefield of hearts. This Mission stands as a beacon of light for Ukrainian Orthodox faithful in the city, uniting them with the greater diaspora and the suffering Church in Ukraine. It is a victory of faith over fear, unity over division, and hope over despair.

As the faithful departed that day, one sentiment was clear: the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA is alive, growing, and victorious in Christ. With the prayers of the saints, the blessing of the hierarchs, and the zeal of the faithful, the Mission of St. George is destined to become a flourishing parish where Christ is proclaimed, children are nurtured, and the Gospel is lived with joy.

May God, through the intercessions of St. George the Victorious, bless this new Mission. May He strengthen its pastor, guide its faithful, inspire its children, and grant it many years of growth and witness. And may the day come soon when this Mission, like St. George himself, stands as a victorious witness of Christ’s eternal Kingdom.

Історія Української Православної Церкви США продовжує писатися не лише на сторінках минулих поколінь, але й у живому свідченні нових громад, нових місій та нових розділів віри. У світлий день неділі – 5 жовтня 2025 року, у Філадельфії, штат Пенсильванія – історичному «Місті братерської любові» – вірні зібралися, щоб вознести подяку Богові за благословення нової духовної спільноти: Святої Місії на честь великомученика ЮріяПобідоносця.

Цей день назавжди залишиться в пам’яті як мить благодаті, радості та глибокого оновлення. З благословення Високопреосвященнішого Митрополита Антонія, Предстоятеля УПЦ США, та у батьківській присутності Високопреосвященнішого Архієпископа Даниїла, Місія була офіційно прийнята в обійми великої духовної родини нашої Церкви.

Святкування розпочалося з натхненного прояву українських традицій. При самих дверях тимчасового храму – Пресвітеріанської церкви Бетесда у Філадельфії – діти Місії з пошаною зустрічали свого архіпастиря. Зі світлими усмішками та серцями, сповненими очікування, вони декламували щирі українські вірші, втілюючи голос нового покоління, яке понесе віру далі.

Вони піднесли Архієпископу хліб і квіти – хліб як символ життя, поживи й вічної Євхаристії, а квіти як символ радості, краси та пахощів Христової любові. Цей давній український звичай гостинності перетворив просту зустріч архіпастиря на священний обряд єдності між пастирем і паствою.

Протоієрей Володимир Стеблина, настоятель Місії, зі смиренням прийняв Архієпископа Даниїла, провівши його до храму з любов’ю та вдячністю. Його слова відображали не лише радість парафіян, але й їхню глибоку надію: що ця молода Місія стане плодоносним виноградником Христовим у саду Церкви.

Найвищою точкою дня стала Божественна Літургія. З молитвою й батьківською любов’ю Архієпископ Даниїл очолив богослужіння разом зі співслужителями: протоієреєм Володимиром Стеблиною, настоятелем Місії,протоієреєм Петром Левко, настоятелем Української Православної парафії св. Юрія в Ярдвіллі, штат Нью-Джерсі,протоієреєм Петром Стеблиною, настоятелем Укураїнської Православної місії св. Архістратига Михаїла в Палатайні, штат Іллінойс.

Біля вівтаря прислуговували семінаристи Свято-Софійської духовної семінарії, нагадуючи, що сьогодення й майбутнє Церкви нерозривно пов’язані через виховання молодих священнослужителів. Літургійні співи чудово виконував квартет випускників Київської духовної академії, які нині проживають у Філадельфії. Їхні голоси наповнили простір небесною гармонією, підносячи серця вірних до Господа й приносячи в американську святиню подих української духовності.

Об’єднані в єдине тіло Христове, вірні в численному товаристві приступали до Святого Потиру – видимого свідчення того, що Євхаристія є центром християнського життя, джерелом оновлення та серцем кожної парафії.

Євангельське читання дня (Мф. 15:21–28) оповідало історію хананейської жінки, яка, незважаючи на відкинення, наполегливо благала Христа зцілити її дочку. В цьому уривку Архієпископ Даниїл відкрив вічний урок: істинна віра наполеглива, смиренна й долає всі перешкоди.

З пастирською мудрістю він провів паралель між Євангелієм і сучасними викликами. Пригадав історію Махатми Ганді, який прагнув зустріти Христа, але був відкинутий християнською спільнотою через поділи й упередження. Згодом Ганді визнав, що захоплюється Христом, але не завжди Його послідовниками. Архієпископ закликав вірних ніколи не допустити, щоб гордість, замкненість чи байдужість отруїли Тіло Христове.

«Церква повинна бути місцем, де всіх приймають, обіймають і зцілюють,» – наголосив він. – «У наших парафіях ми ніколи не повинні дивитися один на одного як на чужинців, а лише як на улюблених дітей Божих.»

Його слова глибоко запали в серця, нагадуючи, що справжня перемога святого Георгія – небесного покровителя Місії – полягає не лише у зовнішніх битвах, але й у внутрішніх перемогах над драконами упередження, апатії та духовної сліпоти.

Літургія була пройнята глибокими молитвами. Архієпископ Даниїл та о. Володимир Стеблина закликали вірних єднати серця в молитві за стражденний український народ – за воїнів, що боронять Батьківщину, за чоловіків і жінок у полоні, за переселенців у пошуках безпеки, за поранених, що несуть видимі й невидимі рани війни.

Зворушливою миттю стало вітання українського воїна Ігоря Козака, який перебуває на лікуванні, у парафіяльній родині. Архієпископ обійняв його, нагадуючи всім, що Церква не відсторонена від поля бою, але нерозривно єднається зі своїми захисниками.

У цей же день світ відзначав Міжнародний день учителя. Архієпископ Даниїл підкреслив, що кожне покликання – чи то воїн, священник, лікар чи керівник – починається з фундаментального впливу вчителя. Він подякував усім освітянам, присутнім у храмі, й тепло згадав власну матір, учительку, чия терпеливість, мудрість і відданість сформували його життєвий шлях. «Без добрих учителів, – сказав він, – ми не можемо мати добрих воїнів, добрих священників, добрих лікарів чи добрих лідерів. Учителі сіють зерна чесноти, знання й віри.»

На завершення Літургії Архієпископ Даниїл освятив дві святі ікони, створені Єлизаветою Симоненко спеціально для громади Місії. Ці ікони, сповнені краси й глибини, стали духовними вікнами до вічної присутності Христа й Його святих.

У врочистий момент Архієпископ вручив о. Володимиру Стеблині Грамоту Єдності, офіційно прийнявши Місію святого Юрія до канонічного й духовного життя УПЦ США. Вірні відповіли радістю, а у вдячність піднесли своєму архіпастирю пам’ятний дар, увіковічнивши його перший візит та заклавши основу духовної спорідненості на покоління.

День завершився спільними світлинами – зі щирими усмішками, братніми обіймами й сяйвом громади, яка зробила свій перший крок у нове майбутнє. Потім усі зібралися на святкову трапезу, де сміх і розмова лилися так само щедро, як і їжа. Ця трапеза стала продовженням Євхаристії – розширенням єдності у братерстві, любові й радості.

Так розпочався перший день нового виміру в житті Української Православної Церкви США. Місія святого великомученика Юрія Побідоносця у Філадельфії постала не лише як нова парафіяльна громада, але як живе свідчення життєдайності, стійкості та віри Церкви.

Історія святого Юрія – це історія мужності, віри та перемоги над злом. Сьогодні ця історія переписується у Філадельфії – не на полі битви зі зброєю, а на полі битви людських сердець. Місія стоїть як маяк світла для українських православних вірних міста, єднаючи їх із великою діаспорою та стражденною Церквою в Україні. Це перемога віри над страхом, єдності над поділом, надії над відчаєм.

Відходячи після богослужіння, вірні мали одностайне відчуття: Українська Православна Церква США живе, зростає й перемагає у Христі. З молитвами святих, з благословенням архієреїв і з ревністю вірних Місія святого Юрія має всі передумови стати квітучою парафією, де проповідується Христос, виховуються діти й Євангеліє живеться у радості.

Нехай Господь за молитвами святого великомученика Юрія Побідоносця благословить цю нову Місію. Нехай зміцнить її настоятеля, провадить її вірних, надихає її дітей і дарує їй багато років зростання й служіння. І нехай настане день, коли ця Місія, як сам святий Георгій, стоятиме як переможне свідчення вічного Царства Христового.

«Цей день створив Господь; возрадуймося й возвеселімося в нім!» (Пс. 118:24)
