“Where the bishop is, there is the fullness of the Church,” proclaimed His Eminence Archbishop Daniel as he began his archpastoral greeting on the steps of the Ukrainian Orthodox Mission Parish of Saints Peter and Paul in West Islip, Long Island, New York. On this sacred summer Sunday, the parish family gathered in awe and gratitude to mark a profound milestone - the 100th anniversary of their community’s witness to Christ, both as a local spiritual haven and as a living mission of the Orthodox faith in the American diaspora.

With reverent hearts, the community welcomed His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, and Archbishop Daniel, spiritual father of the Western Eparchy of the UOC of the USA. As the hierarchs approached the holy temple, children greeted them with flowers, and representatives of the parish sisterhood and brotherhood offered bread and salt - symbols of divine hospitality and spiritual unity in the Ukrainian Orthodox tradition.

In our Holy and ancient faith, bread symbolizes life itself - a gift from God - and salt is the sign of purity, fidelity, and preservation from corruption. This sacred gesture not only honored the archpastors, but also proclaimed: “This temple is our home. And in our home, you are our shepherds.”

It was on this beautiful and historical day that the Divine Liturgy became the beating heart of the celebration - offered by the hierarchs, concelebrating clergy, deacons, and seminarians from St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary, and lifted heavenward by the voices of the parish faithful.

Among the concelebrants were Very Rev. Fr. Stepan Motychak, the current pastor, and Fr. Viktor Wronsky with Pani Ivanka, who had helped revive the parish in 2012, as well as Fr. Milorad Orlik and Pani Jen of the Serbian Orthodox Church, who joined in prayerful solidarity.

During the Liturgy, the faithful listened intently as Archbishop Daniel delivered a moving homily on the occasion of the Sunday of All Saints of the Ukrainian Land - a feast that honors both the canonized saints of Ukraine and the unnamed multitudes who lived holy lives in silence and sacrifice:

“Today, our hearts are lifted in reverence and gratitude as we celebrate the Sunday of All Saints of the Ukrainian Land - a feast of radiant spiritual glory, of ancestral witness, and of undying hope for our nation, both in the homeland and throughout the diaspora. On this sacred day, we remember not only the venerable monastics, holy hierarchs, and new martyrs - but also the countless unnamed faithful who lived quiet lives of love, courage, and unwavering devotion to Christ in the soil of our sacred land.”

“When you stand before a ripe Ukrainian wheat field in late summer,” the Archbishop continued, “you see a golden sea gently swaying under the sun. But up close, each stalk stands on its own - rooted deep in the earth, drawing light from heaven.”

“This is the image of the saints of Ukraine - from Saint Volodymyr the Great to the child who whispers the Lord’s Prayer under the sound of bombs. Some are named. Most are not. Yet all are gathered by the hand of the Divine Harvester.”

Archbishop Daniel reminded the faithful that sainthood is not only memory - it is mission.

“In these tragic years of war, with our homeland wounded and weary, the call to be witnesses returns with burning urgency. When we send food, medical supplies, and aid across the ocean, we are participating in the holy work of the saints. A child once asked me, ‘Vladyko, will this bread become holy?’ And I answered, ‘It already is, because it comes from a heart that loves.’”

“Christ tells us clearly: ‘I was hungry, and you gave Me food…’ That is sainthood. That is witness.”

The Archbishop then pointed to the Eucharist - the divine nourishment of every saint of our land. From this Holy Table, generations drew strength not from power, but from the Body and Blood of Christ. And so he exhorted: “As we send flour and canned goods to those who hunger, let us also feed the soul - with our prayers, fasting, Liturgies, and mercy. Let our lives become a spiritual loaf, broken and given in love.”

After the Liturgy, the entire community processed outdoors for the blessing of the parish Centennial Cross - a sacred symbol of faith planted on the grounds of the church. Archbishop Daniel raised his hands and proclaimed:

“May this Cross be a wellspring of grace and blessing for every soul who enters this temple - for this generation and the generations to come.”

The day continued with a centennial banquet at the local Irish-American Club, where Ukrainian songs, poems, and the vibrant voices of parish children brought joy and tears alike.

Representatives of the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America offered a symbolic wreath of song to the parish, while the faithful reflected on the blessings of their spiritual inheritance.

In his heartfelt address, Fr. Stepan Motychak expressed gratitude to the bishops, clergy, and laity, saying: “Each of you is an irreplaceable part of our parish’s living legacy.”

Metropolitan Antony and Archbishop Daniel offered sincere thanks to God for the century of ministry and the steadfastness of the faithful, and shared the astonishing impact of the Church’s charitable outreach:

“Since the full-scale invasion began, the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA has sent above $4 million in direct aid. In total, across all parishes, more than $50 million in humanitarian assistance has been delivered to Ukraine. This is your offering. Your sacrifice. Your sainthood in action.”

Archbishop Daniel concluded the day by offering an image that lingered in the hearts of many:

“Let us not only honor the saints of our land - let us become the saints our land needs. Be the stalk of wheat. Be the loaf of bread. Be the hand that gives. Be the heart that remembers. Be the saint that feeds others - body and soul.”

«Там, де архієрей — там повнота Церкви», — саме цими словами Високопреосвященніший архієпископ Даниїл розпочав своє архіпастирське вітання на порозі храму Української Православної Місійної Парафії Святих Петра і Павла у місті Вест-Айсліп на Лонг-Айленді, штат Нью-Йорк. У цей благословенний літній недільний день парафіяльна родина зібралася з благоговінням і вдячністю, щоб відзначити важливу подію - 100-річчя свого служіння Христові як місійна громада та духовний осередок у діаспорі.

З великою пошаною парафіяни вітали Його Високопреосвященство митрополита Антонія, Першоієрарха Української Православної Церкви США, та архієпископа Даниїла, духовного отця Західної Єпархії УПЦ США. Діти зустріли архіпастирів з квітами, а представники сестринства та братства піднесли хліб і сіль - вічні символи української гостинності, вірності та духовного благословення.

У давній християнській та українській традиції хліб символізує саме життя - дар Божий, а сіль - чистоту, вірність та охорону від зіпсуття. Цей священний жест був не лише урочистим привітанням, але й виявом: «Цей храм - наш дім. А у цьому домі ви - наші духовні отці».

Урочиста Божественна Літургія, очолена архієреями, духовенством, дияконами та семінаристами Свято-Софіївської семінарії, стала духовним центром святкування. Благодатна молитва єднала всіх - від малечі до старших парафіян.

Серед співслужителів були о. Степан Мотичак, настоятель громади, о. Віктор Вронський з добродійкою Іванкою, які відновили парафію у 2012 році, а також о. Мілорад Орлик з Сербської Православної Церкви, що засвідчили братерську єдність між православними народами.

У своїй глибоко зворушливій проповіді архієпископ Даниїл звернувся до всієї громади, роздумуючи над духовним змістом неділі Всіх Святих землі української: «Улюблені брати і сестри у Христі, Сьогодні наші серця підносяться в благоговінні та подяці, адже ми відзначаємо неділю Всіх Святих землі української - свято духовної слави, національного свідчення та незгасимої надії для нашого народу - як в Україні, так і в розсіянні. Ми згадуємо не лише канонізованих святих - преподобних, ієрархів, новомучеників, - але й незліченну кількість невідомих, які жили тихим життям любові, відваги та непохитної вірності Христові на нашій священній землі».

«Коли стоїш перед дозрілим українським пшеничним полем у серпні, воно здається золотим морем. Але підійшовши ближче, бачиш - кожна стеблина стоїть окремо, вкорінена в землю, тягнеться до світла згори.

Ось такий образ святих землі української. Від князя Володимира до дитини, яка потай проказує “Отче наш”, ховаючись у підвалі під обстрілами - усі вони є колосками в Божому вічному жниві. Одні мають імена, більшість - ні. Але всіх збирає Господь - Жнець Небесний».

«Сьогодні ми покликані бути продовженням їхньої місії. Святість - це не лише пам’ять, а й покликання.

У ці роки болю і війни, коли наша Батьківщина знесилена, поклик бути свідками Христової любові стає особливо гострим. Коли ми пакуємо коробки з їжею і ліками - ми не просто передаємо речі. Ми беремо участь у священному ділі святих.

Одного разу дитина в парафії запитала мене: “Владико, а цей хліб стане святим?” Я відповів: “Він уже є святим - бо дарується з любов’ю».

«І є ще одна пожива - Небесний Хліб. Це Євхаристія, яка укріпляла кожного святого в часи вигнання, переслідувань, голоду і війни. Вони черпали силу не з цього світу, а з Чаші Христової.

Тому ми покликані не тільки годувати тіла - а й душі: молитвою, постом, Літургією і ділами милосердя. Хай все наше життя стане духовною просфоро́ю - зламаною і дарованою з любов’ю».

Після Літургії усі вийшли на подвір’я храму, де архієпископ Даниїл освятив парафіяльний хрест, встановлений на честь століття громади. У своїй молитві він закликав: «Нехай цей Хрест буде джерелом благодаті і благословення для кожної душі, яка переступає поріг цього святого храму - нині і навіки віків».

Святкування продовжилося ювілейним банкетом у місцевому ірландському клубі, де звучали українські пісні, дитячі виступи, вірші та привітання від Українського Конгресового Комітету Америки. Вони подарували символічний вінець українських пісень - як дар вдячності парафії за її духовне служіння.

Протоієрей Степан Мотичак звернувся до присутніх зі словами подяки: «Кожен із вас є невід’ємною частиною життя нашої громади. Разом ми будуємо майбутнє у Христі».

У своєму зверненні владика Даниїл підкреслили силу Церкви, яка діє з любов’ю і жертовністю: «З початку повномасштабної війни УПЦ США передала майже 4 мільйони доларів гуманітарної допомоги Україні. Загалом -більше ніж 50 мільйонів доларів пожертвували громади УПЦ США. Це ваше свідчення. Це - ваша святість у дії».

«Дорогі, не лише вшановуймо святих нашої землі. Станьмо тими святими, яких наша земля потребує сьогодні. Станьмо колоском пшениці. Станьмо хлібом для інших. Руку, що подає. Серцем, що пам’ятає. Станьмо святими, які годують інших - тілом і душею».
