In the heart of Eastern Ukraine, in a land steeped in centuries of history and resilience, a small town of Petropalivka founded in 1775 - part of the historic Donbas frontier defense - now finds itself bruised and battered by the cruelty of war. Once a thriving settlement, the area now lies within the gray zone: surrounded by destruction, cold winds of fear, and the scars of constant Russian shelling. And yet, amid these ruins, the radiance of Christian love shines brightly - through the outstretched arms of the clergy, faithful, and friends of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the United States of America.

With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, Prime Hierarch of the UOC of the USA, and under the spiritual leadership of Archbishop Daniel, the Church has mobilized a mission of mercy rooted in the Gospel and nourished by sacrificial love. Across thousands of miles, American Orthodox Christians have united to support those whose lives have been turned upside down. With each passing season - even now as Ukraine slowly welcomes the promise of spring - the Church continues to deliver life-sustaining support to the most vulnerable: the elderly, the disabled, the children, and those living under occupation or in the shadow of daily bombardment.

In addition to food parcels, medicine, and hygiene items, this Paschal season saw the delivery of Paschal baskets - filled with blessed bread, cheese, sausage, eggs, and sweets - prepared lovingly by communities across the United States. These baskets became tangible signs of Resurrection hope, reminders that the light of Christ cannot be extinguished by tanks or missiles.

Particularly moving was the Church’s outreach to a facility for elderly and handicapped individuals in the Donbas region. These are people who once labored with their hands, built their communities, and now live in frailty and deep need. The joy in their eyes as they received Paschal gifts - simple food, warm blankets, and words of compassion - was a sacred moment of encounter. For in that encounter, Christ Himself was present.

As Archbishop Daniel reflected: “That is what Christian ministry is all about. That’s where the Resurrection becomes real - not only in our prayers or in our reports, but in the actions of Christian love we perform in the name of Christ. The hands that once worked now tremble with gratitude. The eyes of the forgotten now shine with light. That is where Christ is alive - in every act of kindness done in His name. This is the Pascha we are called to live.”

Alongside the elderly, the children of war-torn villages became recipients of this sacred mission. Laughter and tears mixed together as boys and girls unwrapped small gifts - toys, sweets, coloring books, and prayer cards - reminders that they are not forgotten, that even from across the ocean, their brothers and sisters in Christ are embracing them.

One of the leaders in this humanitarian mission, Fr. Kostyantyn Kuznetsov and his wife Natalia, continue to dedicate their lives to this calling. With quiet courage and the blessing of the Church, they navigate the dangerous roads of Eastern Ukraine, visiting cities like Konstantynivka and numerous towns and villages where hope is fading. And yet, with every delivery, they bring not just aid - but the presence of Christ.

In a heartfelt message of thanks, a local coordinator in Konstantyn wrote: “Every day we are on the road, every day different cities and villages, but one thing remains the same - we carry a full truckload of aid to the most vulnerable and in dire need. Food, medicine, hygiene and a kind, gentle word are our key to a wounded soul and heart. Every day, people who have found themselves below the poverty line write to us, call us with the hope of comprehensive help. Many tearful stories, requests, despair with questions ‘Why?’ ‘Why me?’ ‘And when will it all end?’ have been heard. We try to comfort a person, but it is difficult to find words when there are deaths in the family as a result of the war. Burnout affects everyone, including us. But our social service team, despite daily shelling and arrivals, continues to help all those in need.”

Even as rockets rain down and shadows stretch over the land, the Church does not retreat. It presses forward - carrying not only food and supplies but the radiant message of the Risen Christ, alive and present in every visit, every tear, and every prayer.

This is not merely charity. It is Eucharistic service. It is the Church being the Church - a living icon of Christ, whose love transcends borders, languages, and even war.

We call upon all people of goodwill: join us. The wounds of Ukraine are deep, but the balm of love is stronger still. У самому серці Східної України, на землі, просякнутій багатовіковою історією та стійкістю, невелике містечко Петропалівка, засноване в 1775 році – частина історичної оборони кордону Донбасу – тепер опинилося побитим та побитим жорстокістю війни. Колись процвітаюче поселення, ця місцевість зараз знаходиться в сірій зоні: оточена руйнуваннями, холодними вітрами страху та шрамами постійних російських обстрілів. І все ж, серед цих руїн, яскраво сяє сяйво християнської любові – крізь простягнуті обійми духовенства, вірних та друзів Української Православної Церкви Сполучених Штатів Америки.

З благословення Його Високопреосвященства Митрополита Антонія, Первоієрарха УПЦ США, та під духовним керівництвом архієпископа Даниїла, Церква мобілізувала місію милосердя, що вкорінюється в Євангелії та живиться жертовною любов'ю. За тисячі миль американські православні християни об'єдналися, щоб підтримати тих, чиє життя перевернулося з ніг на голову. З кожним минаючим сезоном – навіть зараз, коли Україна повільно вітає обіцянку весни – Церква продовжує надавати життєво важливу підтримку найуразливішим: людям похилого віку, інвалідам, дітям та тим, хто живе під окупацією або в тіні щоденних бомбардувань.

Окрім продуктових наборів, ліків та засобів гігієни, у цей пасхальний сезон громади Церкви допомогли доставити пасхальні кошики, наповнені освяченим хлібом, сиром, ковбасою, яйцями та солодощами. Ці кошики стали відчутними знаками надії на Воскресіння, нагадуванням про те, що світло Христа не може бути загашене танками чи ракетами.

Особливо зворушливою була допомога Церкви закладу для людей похилого віку та людей з інвалідністю на Донбасі. Це люди, які колись працювали своїми руками, будували свої громади, а тепер живуть у немічності та глибокій нужді. Радість у їхніх очах, коли вони отримували пасхальні дари – просту їжу, теплі ковдри та слова співчуття – була священним моментом зустрічі. Бо в цій зустрічі був присутній Сам Христос.

Як розмірковував архієпископ Даниїл: «Саме в цьому полягає християнське служіння. Саме тут Воскресіння стає реальним – не лише в наших молитвах чи звітах, але й у діях християнської любові, які ми чинимо в ім’я Христа. Руки, що колись працювали, тепер тремтять від вдячності. Очі забутих тепер сяють світлом. Саме там Христос живий – у кожному акті доброти, зробленому в Його ім’я. Це та Пасха, яку ми покликані жити».

Поряд з людьми похилого віку, діти з постраждалих від війни сіл стали одержувачами цієї священної місії. Сміх і сльози змішувалися, коли хлопчики та дівчатка розгортали маленькі подарунки – іграшки, солодощі, розмальовки та молитовні картки – нагадування про те, що вони не забуті, що навіть з-за океану їхні брати та сестри у Христі обіймають їх.

Один з лідерів цієї гуманітарної місії, отець Костянтин Кузнецов, та його дружина Наталія продовжують присвячувати своє життя цьому покликанню. З тихою мужністю та благословенням Церкви вони прокладають небезпечні дороги Східної України, відвідуючи такі міста, як Константинівка, та численні містечка та села, де згасає надія. І все ж, з кожною доставкою вони несуть не просто допомогу, а присутність Христа.

У щирому посланні подяки місцевий координатор у Константинові написав: «Щодня ми в дорозі, щодня різні міста та села, але одне залишається незмінним – ми веземо повну вантажівку допомоги найуразливішим та тим, хто її гостро потребує. Їжа, ліки, гігієна та добре, ніжне слово – це наш ключ до пораненої душі та серця. Щодня люди, які опинилися за межею бідності, пишуть нам, телефонують з надією на всебічну допомогу. Було почуто багато слізних історій, прохань, відчаю з питаннями «Чому?», «Чому я?», «І коли це все закінчиться?». Ми намагаємося втішити людину, але важко знайти слова, коли в родині є смерті внаслідок війни. Вигорання впливає на всіх, включаючи нас. Але наша команда соціальних служб, незважаючи на щоденні обстріли та прибуття людей, продовжує допомагати всім нужденним».

Навіть коли падають ракети, а тіні тягнуться над землею, Церква не відступає. Вона просувається вперед – несучи не лише їжу та припаси, а й сяюче послання Воскреслого Христа, живе та присутнє в кожному візиті, кожній сльозі та кожній молитві.

Це не просто благодійність. Це євхаристійне служіння. Це Церква є Церквою – живою іконою Христа, чия любов долає кордони, мови та навіть війну.

Ми закликаємо всіх людей доброї волі: приєднуйтесь до нас. Рани України глибокі, але бальзам любові ще сильніший. Ваші пожертви, ваші молитви, ваші голоси – все стає частиною цієї святої місії. Церква продовжує нести Пасху.
