Archbishop Daniel Represents UOC of the USA at the Centennial Celebration of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada

With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony, who continues to recover following a major car accident, Archbishop Daniel departed for Saskatoon, Canada in order to represent the fullness of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA at the Centennial Celebration of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada.

Vladyka Daniel arrived Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on Thursday, August 9, 2018 in the early hours of afternoon and immediately joined the clergy of the UOCC in their Annual Clergy Conference. Being one of the speakers at the Conference, His Eminence was tasked to deliver remarks, addressing the practical aspects of pastoral service in the age of Social Media and technological advances. Prior to the presentation at the Clergy Conference, Archbishop Daniel delivered a formal greeting to the hierarchs and clergy of the UOCC in behalf of the Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, His Eminence Metropolitan Antony.

On Friday morning, the Extraordinary Sobor of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada was called into session, beginning with the Archpastoral Divine Liturgy, co-served by the bishops of the UOCC: His Eminence Metropolitan Yuriy of Winnipeg and all Canada, His Grace Bishop Ilarion of Edmonton and Western Eparchy and His Grace Bishop Andriy of the Eastern Eparchy of the UOCC. Present at the Liturgy were the following hierarchs: His Eminence Metropolitan Sotirios of the Greek Orthodox Church of Canada and Exarch of the Ecumenical Patriarch, His Eminence Archbishop Job of Telmissos, personal representative of the Ecumenical Patriarch for the celebration, and His Eminence Archbishop Daniel of the Western Eparchy of the UOC of the USA. Following the Eucharistic worship, the newly commissioned icon of Holy Apostle Andrew was brought forth for veneration.

In the presence of about 190 clergy and Sobor Delegates, the formal resolution of the Centennial Sobor was accepted, reflecting upon the 100 years long history of the Church while humbly looking into the new centennial of ministry. Metropolitan Yuriy warmly welcomed all visiting hierarchs and invited Metropolitan Sotirios to deliver formal address of His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch to the fullness of the UOCC. Archbishop Daniel greeted the UOCC on behalf of Metropolitan Antony, clergy and faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA stating that the history of both churches is intertwine and it has been of mutual benefit throughout the past century. Vladyka Daniel reflected upon the events of 1960s, when the hierarchs of the UOC of the USA humbly offered service of leadership to the clergy and faithful of the UOCC and now in 2018, when Metropolitan Antony was hospitalized following the car accident on the eve of the Centennial Celebration, Metropolitan Yuriy humbly offered his service of pastoral leadership to the clergy and faithful of the UOC of the USA. Offering profound gratitude for the provided assistance, Vladyka Daniel called upon the delegates of the Extraordinary Sobor to work closely among themselves in fostering the spirit of Ukrainian Orthodoxy in Canada and in North America.

Following the conclusion of the short Extraordinary Sobor, St. Andrew College sponsored Centennial Symposium covering various topics of ministerial past of the clergy and laity of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada. Metropolitan Antony was supposed to be one of the moderators of the symposium, but due to his absence Archbishop Daniel offered remarks on his behalf. Vladyka summarized the 5 presentations to one word – SERVICE – in the Name of Christ for the People of God.

Following dinner, the delegates and guests of the Centennial Celebration traveled to the Ukrainian Museum of Canada for the formal exhibit opening ceremony dedicated to the history and ministry of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada.

The celebration is set to continue on Saturday and Sunday – 11-12 August, 2018.
