Holy Archangel Michael Feast Day Celebration

in Minneapolis, MN

Parishioners and parish pastor, Very Rev. Fr. Evhen Kumka of St. Michael and St. George Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Minneapolis, MN observed its patronal feast day by welcoming His Eminence Archbishop-elect Daniel, Deacon John Charest of Chicago, IL, Subdeacon Mykola Zomchak of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary (South bound Brook, NJ) joined by Very Rev. Fr. Peter Siwko and parishioners of St Katherine’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Arden Hills, MN and other guests in weekend prayer during Great Vespers on Saturday, November 19, 2016 and the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy on Sunday November 20, 2016.

Children of the Parish Ukrainian school, under the leadership of Maria Matleshewski, dressed in traditional Ukrainian embroidered blouses and shirts greeted Vladyka Daniel with bouquets of flowers and a delicious locally baked korovaj (graciously made and donated by Ken Matleshewski). The service and sermon were very moving as Archbishop-elect Daniel challenged all the parishioners to examine how to live an Orthodox Christian life in a growing secular society. The responses and hymns sung by the joint choir of both local churches directed by Andrij Karkoc were spiritually uplifting and beautiful.

A reception, facilitated by Valentina Yarr, former President of the Parish Board and current Board Trustee, followed at the Parish hall where participants enjoyed a delicious luncheon prepared by Walter Wdowychyn husband of Julie  Pawluk, Board Trustee and Jackie Pawluk, Cultural Chair and volunteers from the parish, Church Board, and Ukrainian school.

A true treat to the festivities was a music program performed by the students of Ukrainian school with assistance of music teacher Larysa Geisen and other teachers and parents.  The event was rounded out by warm greetings from Oleksiy Khrystych President Church Board of St. Katherines’ noting that on his way into the church he noticed that it was built in 1926 exactly 90 years ago and wishing to join us again for our 100 year commemorative celebration in ten years.

His Eminence Archbishop-elect Daniel gave an inspirational message calling on all participants to examine their Orthodox Christianity, to wear a cross not just as an ornament or piece of jewelry but as a sign of being an active participant and steward of the Orthodox Christian faith.

The event concluded with prayer led by Father Kumka and Father Siwko. Parishioners and faithful are looking forward to welcoming His Eminence to our beautiful Parish and city in the near future as both Parishes of St. Michael and St. George and St Katherine begin work to support the 21st Sobor endorsed Strategic Plan for the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA and its Parishes.
