Metropolia Commemorates 1st Anniversary of the Repose of Metropolitan Constantine!

On Saturday, May 18, 2013 on the feast of the Holy Great Martyr Irene, the first anniversary of the repose of the ever-memorable Metropolitan Constantine – third Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA– was prayerfully commemorated at Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Great Prince Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox parish in Pittsburgh (Southside), PA.

The Divine Liturgy on the occasion of Metropolitan Constantine’s first anniversary was celebrated by the current Prime Hierarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, His Eminence Metropolitan Antony and His Grace Bishop Daniel, President of the Consistory. Serving with our hierarchs were Very Rev. Fr. John Haluszczak, pastor of St. Vladimir Parish; Protopresbyter George Hnatko, Dean of the Pittsburgh Deanery; Fr. Robert Popichak, Holy Ghost Parish, Slickville, PA; Fr. Michael Hontaruk, Assistant Pastor of St. Vladimir Cathedral, Parma, OH;  Fr. Mark Swindle, Protection of the Holy Virgin Parish, Arnold, PA; Fr. Paissius McGrath, Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, Lyndora, PA; Frs. Vasyl Dovhan and Vasyl Dmytryshyn, students at St. Sophia Seminary.  Other clergy present for the service were Archimandrite Dmitri, V. Rev. John Nakonachny, Pastor of St. Vladimir Cathedral, Parma, OH; V. Rev. Myron Oryhon, Pastor of Protection of the Mother of God Cathedral, Allentown, PA; V. Rev. Stephen Repa, Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, Carnegie, PA; V. Rev. Timothy Tomson, Pastor of St. Mary Parish, McKees Rocks, PA; Deacon Dennis Lapushansky, Carnegie, PA; Subdeacons-Seminarians Adrian Mazur, Ioan Mazur, Yurij Andreiko and Ivan Chopko, along with Seminarians Volodymyr Sukanets and Volodymyr Jaworskyj and local altar servers.  Parishioners from many parishes in the PA and OH were present, filling the church to capacity, as well as the parish social center for a repast meal.

Upon completion of the Liturgy, Metropolitan Antony addressed the assembled faithful and reflected on his personal 46 year relationship with Metropolitan Constantine – both the serious and the humorous moments. Metropolitan Antony recalled that the Metropolitan gave of himself not only in that personal relationship, but to almost everyone present for the Memorial Liturgy and Panakhyda services – especially to the youth of the Church.  He spoke of the many time the Metropolitan was there to calm the nerves of not only himself as a parish priest, but for countless others through all the years of his episcopacy.  As the memorial service began, His Eminence asked all present to contemplate during the prayers on the ways that Metropolitan Constantine touched their lives.  He reminded all present that the way we live our lives is, in reality, the seal on the entire priesthood of Metropolitan Constantine.  The only real way that we can memorialize our late Metropolitan is to live lives of love – a willingness to give of oneself as Metropolitan Constantine did.

Following the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy and Panakhyda, a Memorial luncheon took place in the parish social center.  Offering their own personal reflections of their relationship with Metropolitan Constantine were Fr. John Haluszczak and Fr. John Nakonachny.  Daria Mazur, the Metropolitan’s sister, concluded the program thanking all present for the ways in which they touched the life of her brother and allowed him to touch theirs.  She stressed that the greatest gift any person can receive or give is prayer.  She called upon all present to send up powerful prayers to God, either individual or communally for the repose of the soul of her brother and for one another.

The day concluded with the Memorial service at St. Vladimir parish cemetery, at the gravesite of Metropolitan Constantine, next to his beloved family – parents Stanley and Catherine, and brother Joseph, who were also remembered in prayer by Metropolitan Antony and Bishop Daniel, along with family, clergy and seminarians.  The beautiful “CHRIST IS RISEN!”  at the conclusion of the service rang through the wooded areas surrounding the cemetery and into the neighboring homes, witnessing to “all who have ears to hear” the Good News of the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and hopefully opening their hearts and minds to something more than the drab secular indoctrination they receive daily from their computers, televisions and other media devices.

Memory Eternal to Metropolitan Constantine!
