The Feast of Theophany at St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, Chicago, IL!

Христос Хрещається! В річці Йордані!
Christ is Baptized! In the Jordan!

Хрещення Господа нашого Ісуса Христа св.Церква святкує 19 Січня. Це свято також прийнято називати Богоявлення, так як у цій події явила себе уся Пресвята Трійця: Бог Отець, що говорив з неба; Бог Син, що Хрестився від Іоанна Хрестителя в річці Йордані; Бог Дух Святий, що зійшов на Христа під час Хрещення у вигляді білого голуба.

У деяких областях України є давній звичай - Йорданське Водохреща відбувається на річці. Якщо за день-другий до Йордану є великий мороз і міцна крига, то тоді прорубують ополонку у вигляді Хреста і кожний бажаючий може  зануритися в освячених водах ріки.

З самого ранку в церкві відбувається свята Літургія. Після Богослужіння, священник, хор і миряни йдуть до річки де була прорублена ополонка у вигляді Хреста. Попереду несуть  Хрест і хоругви, хор співає стехиру «Голос Господній...», після хористів іде священник і диякон, далі – миряни, які несуть з собою посуд, для того аби набрати свяченої води.

Oпісля священник занурює хрест у річку, в цей час хористи співають тропар свята: «В Йордані xрещающуся Тобі, Господи»...

Цей звичай я знаю не з розповідей, адже я сама в дитинстві занурювалася у річку на свято Йордану...  Був гарний, сонячний і морозний день. Було докладено дуже багато зусиль і вмовлянь, аби переконати маму у тому, що занурення у річку не принесе нам шкоди (мені і сестрі – ми обидві хотіли відчути усю повноту радості свят Йорданських), а навпаки, укріпить наші духовні і тілесні сили. На той момент ми дуже хворіли і мама ніяк не погоджувалася. Але після декількох годин вмовлянь все ж таки погодилася на наше прохання. Як же на душі було радісно і який був молитовнийдуховний настрій. Зараз, напевно я би не ризикнулацього зробити, але дитяча віра робить чудеса! Тільки подумати, на вулиці мороз до -18, а ми не боялися! Це дійсно чудо! Я і сестра занурилися у води річки під урочистий спів хору: «Во Йордані крещающуся Тобі, Господи!»

Почуття великоїрадості, небесної благодаті від свяченої води вмить забрали сильне почуття холоду. Душа була сповнена нових хвилювань, нових відчуттів вдячності і довіри до Господа! Віри у те, що Господь укріпить не тільки духовні сили, але й тілесні! Є дуже гарні слова в православ’ї: «По вірі вашій, буде вам».На слідуючий день ми прокинулися  здоровими. Дійсно кажуть: «Дитяча віра творить чудеса! Вона сама чиста і сама сильна!». 

На свято Йордану, вода освячується особливим чином – великим Йорданським освяченям.Йорданська вода зберігається довго. Вона не псується на протязі цілого року. Свячену воду зберігають біля ікон.

Йордарнську воду ще називають «Велика агіасма», що у перекладі з грецької означає «Велика святиня». І відношення до святині має бути відповідним. П’ють воду натще. Спочатку потрібно помолитися ранішнє правило, попросити у Господа благословення на прийдешній день. Якщо людина хворіє, то спочатку натще повинна випити Йорданської води, а потім приймати ліки...

Свято Йордану завітало і до нас в Чикаго. У нашому соборі, св.Князя Володимира цей день був сповнений особливим радісним духом, оскільки сам Владика наш Преосвященніший Даниїл, єпископ Західньої єпархії в США відслужив божественну літургію археєрейським чином.

Дуже приємно було Владиці  відчути зустріч найменьших парафіян – діточок парафії св.Князя Володимира, які зустріли Владику з прекрасними букетами у руках і з щирою радістю у маленьких сердечках, яка відбивалася у великих і чистих дитячих оченятах. Хлібом-сіллю зустрічали нашого дорогого Владику голова управи пані Раїса Братків та голова сестринства пані Надія Брюшенко. Відтак слово привітання взяв наш настоятель отець Іван.

В чудових,  різдвяних, білосніжнихархієрейських ризах Преосвященнійший Даниїл розпочав Божественну Літургію. Йому співслужили новий настоятель нашої парафії о.Іван Лимар та протодиякон Андрій Фрончак.

Чудовий спів нашого архієрейського хору «Боян» на чолі з дирегентом Володимиром Поповичем прекрасив урочисте богослужіння.

Після прочитаного Евангелія Владика Даниїл виголосив змістовну богословську проповідь  «Значення Водохреща для спасіння людства -чистота душі яка вкрай необхідна для нашого молитовного спілкування з своїм Творцем».

Великою радістю було й те, що всі діти нашої школи українознавства  причастилися Святих Христових Тайн.

В кінці божественної літургії наш архипастир освятив води, щоб більш ніж 2 сотні парафіян та прихожан, які зібралися в цей день у храмі, могли з радістю спожити її для свого духовного збагачення.

Наше сестритство частувало усіх бажаючих смачним обідом, а душевна і дружня розмова за трапезою створила домашній і тихий настрій на душі кожної людини.

Ще раз дякуємо усім, хто прийшов у цей день,  а найперше Преосвященнійшому нашому духовному батьку єпископу Даниїлу, що зміг приїхати до нас, відвідати своїх духовних дітей ірозділити з нами свято Хрещення Господнього. Іспола еті деспота!!!

The Feast of Theophany at St. Volodymyr Cathedral in Chicago, IL

"At Your Baptism in the Jordan, Lord, the Worship of the Trinity was Made Manifest...."

Nearly 400 faithful and visitors to St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago, IL gathered at their parish temple to celebrate the feast day of Theophany of our Lord! The services of the feast day were led by His Grace Bishop Daniel, a ruling hierarch of the Western Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.

As the bishop entered through the threshold of his cathedral, he was greeted by the youngest parishioners of the cathedral community with flowers and handmade cards. Mrs. Raisa Bratkiw, president of the cathedral’s board of administration and Mrs. Nadiya Brushenko presented the hierarch with the traditional bread and salt. Holding a tray with the holy water and a cross, Very Rev. Fr. Ivan Lymar, pastor of St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago, IL welcomed His Grace Bishop Daniel to his home cathedral and called upon the bishop to lead the congregation in service of prayerful renewal of their baptismal promises.

In his sermon Vladyka Daniel reflected on the feast of Theophany, explaining to the faithful that Christ’s baptism in the Jordan was “theophany,” a manifestation of God to the world, because it was the beginning of our Lord’s public ministry. It was also a “theophany” in that the world was granted a revelation of the Holy Trinity. All three Persons were made manifest together: the Father testified from on high to the divine Sonship of Jesus; the Son received His Father’s testimony; and the Spirit was seen in the form of a dove, descending from the Father and resting upon the Son. The theme of “manifestation” or “revelation” is also expressed in Scripture with the symbolism of light. In the hymn of the Feast we sing, “Christ has appeared and enlightened the world.” Thus, January 19th is also known as the Feast of Lights. The Church celebrates on this day the illumination of the world by the light of Christ.

“We’re blessing the waters as a physical reminder of the responsibility we have to care for the earth,” said the bishop. “Each year, we place a cross into the waters asking Jesus Christ to send down the Holy Spirit for the cleansing and sanctification of the water… The triple miracle which took place on this occasion — the opening of the heavens, the descent of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove and the testimony of God the Father — completely convinced Saint John that Jesus Christ was the awaited Messiah. The visible descent of the Holy Spirit on the Messiah was exactly what Saint John was waiting for, because at the very beginning, when he was sent to preach as a prophet, God told him: "Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He Who baptizes with the Holy Spirit." Consequently, from that moment John the Baptist could unmistakably and without the slightest doubt testify to all that Jesus is the Messiah and the Lamb of God that takes upon Himself the sins of the world. Soon after the Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ, John sent some of his disciples to Him: the brothers Andrew (the First-called Apostle) and Peter and the brothers James and John (the Theologian). They joined Christ and became His first disciples and apostles… The Feast of the Theophany, or the Baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ, is, along with Pascha, one of the most ancient Christian holidays. It is dedicated to our Lord’s Baptism in the Jordan River. From ancient times Christians celebrated this feast day with great enthusiasm, because it reminded them of their own baptism and stirred them to a deeper consciousness of the power of this Mystery… As we celebrate today the baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Jordan, let us thank God for the free gift of salvation through the grace of baptism. Let us also earnestly ask him for the grace to keep us faithful to our baptismal promises to say no to Satan and all his false promises and to say yes to God even unto death.”

Following the Divine Liturgy, the bishop, assisted by Fr. Ivan Lymar, pastor of the cathedral parish family and Protodeacon Andriy Fronchak blessed the water. The Great Blessing of Water is perhaps the most memorable part of the Theophany services. Water, as a symbol of purification and cleansing connected explicitly with the blessing of the Jordan River which occurred at the baptism of the Lord.

Following the Great Blessing of Water, the bishop, clergy and faithful in attendance shared in a meal, prepared by the Cathedral’s St. Olha Sisterhood, chaired by Pani Nadiya Brushenko. During the luncheon, the students of St. Volodymyr’s cathedral school caroled for their bishop and the faithful in attendance. 

On January 20, 2013, St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Chicago, IL was blessed with a visit from His Grace Bishop Daniel, for the feast of Synaxis of St. John the Baptist. His Grace concelebrated the services with Fr. Ivan Lymar and Protoseacon Andriy Fronchak – the clergy of the cathedral parish community, and a good contingent of parishioners who admirably made the effort to participate in the feast. The cathedral choir was directed by Maestro Volodymyr Popowych.

All appreciated the time Vladyka spent with the parish, manifesting the episcopal ministry through his prayer, teaching, encouragement, and fellowship, and especially on this, the Great Feast of Theophany.
