The Feast of Theophany at St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, Parma, Ohio
By Fr. Michael Hontaruk,
Assistant Pastor of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral, Parma, Ohio

The third major feast Day after Nativity of Christ is the Feast of Holy Theophany that we celebrate every year on January 19th. On that day the Holy Trinity was revealed: Father of God spoke: “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.” (Mt. 3, 17) Jesus Christ was baptized in the Jordan River by the John the Baptist and the Holy Spiritdescending like a dove and alighting on him. Holy Theophany is the Feast of Lights in which we meeting our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ-Son of God, which at the age 30 years began His teaching of the Gospel to all people.

On the feast day of Theophany, following the Divine Liturgy, the Great Blessing of the Water is usually celebrated. This year at St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Parma, OH, the faithful together with the clergy celebrated this Holy Day. The water was blessed in the morning of the Eve of Theophany. That evening the Great Compline was served with the responses sang by the cathedral choir and readings were readby the parish youth. On January 19th, the Feast of Theophany began with the celebration of the Divine Liturgy. Once again the cathedral choir sang the responses. On Saturday morning, following Divine Liturgy, the water was blessed again. The children from Ukrainian School came to this Service and attentively listened to a sermon which Fr. John Nakonachny – the Pastor of the Cathedral delivered for them. After the great Blessing of the Water, Fr. Michael Hontaruk blessed the church building and all present faithful with sprinkles of the Holy Water. After that, the 10 foot Ice Cross, which once again graces the front of the cathedral church and enhances the Holy Day was blessed. We appreciate this annual tradition which is admired by thousands of people who drive by our church daily. After the Divine services everyone was invited to the Annual Orphanage Brunch which was organized by Protodeacon Ihor Mahlay.

Святo Бoгoявлення – це є Святo Свiтла у якoму ми зустрiчаємo Гoспoда, Який в 30 рiчнoму вiцi рoзпoчав Свoю святу мiсiю, навчаючи Євангелiя всьoгo людства.
