Oklahoma Parish Outing!

OK Parish Outing
Subdeacon Robby Wall

Early Saturday morning on the 29th of October, twenty-eight members of St. Mary Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Jones, OK loaded into two 15-passenger vans and, after a prayer and blessing for safe travel, headed to Southwest Oklahoma for a parish outing. Our first stop was the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan with its 5-D theater and displays explaining the cattle drives of the 1880s. Following a security check at the Ft. Sill main gate, we toured the massive U.S. Army Field Artillery Museum near Lawton. Lunch found us at the famous Meers Store and Restaurant where we enjoyed their plate-sized burgers made from their own herd of Texas Longhorn cattle. We then ventured into the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge and its Visitor Center Museum. Everyone loved to see the free-roaming buffalo and longhorn cattle; however it was the prairie dog city that was a favorite of the children. Our day continued with a stop at the Holy City of the Wichitas where the annual Easter Sunrise Service and Passion Play are performed. From there we drove to the top of Mt. Scott, the highest mountain in Oklahoma, for a spectacular view of the Wichitas and to watch a prayer service by Native American Indians as the sun slowly set over the mountains. Leaving Mt. Scott we toured the charming village of Medicine Park, located on Medicine Creek with its reported healing waters.

Returning to Oklahoma City, we parted ways late that evening. Everyone was tired but fulfilled from a long day of sightseeing and fellowship. Glory be to God for the beautiful day He provided us and for our safe travel.
