Recognition for the Graduates of Southside
Submitted by: Lara Haluszczak

The parishioners of St. Vladimir’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Pittsburgh, PA) recognized their 2011 graduating class of students.  While the diplomas varied from high school to collegiate level, the hard work and dedication of these students is what shows through.  Of the eight students acknowledged, four graduated from high schools in the Pittsburgh area, and four attended various universities on the east coast.

The high school students include Julian Burgan (Mt. Lebanon High School), Taylor Gladys (Woodland Hills High School), Roman Perdziola (Bethel Park High School), and Robbie Zewe (Baldwin High School).  After graduation, Taylor will be attending Case Western Reserve University to study Biochemistry.  Roman will be attending the University of Pittsburgh for Engineering.  Grove City College is where Robbie will be majoring in Biology.

As for the collegiate students, their university’s locations differ, just as their fields of study.  Jordan Gladys completed a five-year program in Biological Sciences with a concentration in Pathobiology at Drexel University.  Jordan will begin one year of service with AmeriCorps through the Philadelphia Health Corps, an establishment that provides for those suffering from health care disparities in Philadelphia.

Lara Haluszczak was a student at the Pennsylvania State University who earned her Bachelor of Science in Geosciences with an emphasis in Hydrogeology.  Lara’s studies culminated in an undergraduate thesis about water chemistry in the Marcellus Shale.

Aleksandra Kocelko studied in the honors college at American University in Washington, D.C. and received her Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies, concentrating on communications, legal institutions, economics, and government.  While at American University, Aleksandra served as an executive in the student government.  Aleksandra will continue her studies this fall at Duquesne University’s School of Law.

Christine Kalinik graduated from The University of Pittsburgh with a Master's in Social Work.  During her two years in the master’s program, she interned with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Westmoreland County. CASA is an organization that uses volunteers as advocates in abuse and neglect cases with children.  In her second year, Christine interned at Magee Women's Hospital's outpatient clinic, which serves low-income and underserved populations. After graduation, Christine was hired at Magee to serve as a clinical social worker in the outpatient clinic in the Pittsburgh area.

As the summer months begin and all graduates prepare for the next chapter in their lives, the parishioners of St. Vladimir’s pray that Our Lord guide them in all that they strive to do in His All-Holy Name.  May God grant them many blessings now and in the future!
