“While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” - John 12:36

In the stillness of the midnight hours, as darkness gently covered the world and silence embraced the grounds of the Spiritual Center of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA in South Bound Brook, New Jersey, the bright light of Pascha once again pierced the night. The faithful clergy and devoted children of God gathered prayerfully at St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church for the final Midnight Divine Liturgy of the Leave-taking of the Bright Feast of the Resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

For forty sacred days, the Church proclaimed the triumphant victory of life over death, hope over despair, and light over darkness. And now, standing prayerfully at the threshold between Pascha and the approaching Great Feast of Pentecost, the faithful slowly entered into yet another mystery of divine grace - carrying the joy of the Resurrection into the life of the Church and into the depths of the human heart.

His Eminence Archbishop Daniel presided over the joyful Eucharistic celebration, joined in prayer by the Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Pasakas, pastor of St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church and Executive Assistant to the Council of Bishops of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. Concelebrating the Divine Liturgy were: the Very Rev. Fr. Victor Wronsky, pastor of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Brookly, NY; the Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Shak, pastor of St. Panteleimon Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Brooklyn, New York; the Rev. Fr. Ivan Tchopko of the Three Holy Hierarchs Seminary Chapel; the Rev. Fr. Oleh Kravchenko of the Dormition of the Mother of God Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Northampton, Pennsylvania; the Rev. Fr. Sviatoslav Hot, pastor of Holy Ascension Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Maplewood, New Jersey; the Rev. Fr. Roman Marchyshak of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Trenton, New Jersey; the Rev. Fr. Pavlo Vysotskyi, pastor of St. Katherine Ukrainian Orthodox Parish in Arden Hills, Minnesota; Deacon Andrii Akulenko of Sdt. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church in South Bound Brook, NJ.

Subdeacons, readers, and seminarians of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary prayerfully assisted in the Holy Altar, while the choir of the Seminary Chapel lifted their voices in sacred praise, filling the church with the beauty of Paschal hymns and resurrectional joy.

As the Gospel appointed for the Leave-taking of Pascha was proclaimed, Archbishop Daniel offered spiritual reflections centered upon the eternal light of Christ. Referring to the words of the Savior - “While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light” - the Archbishop reminded the faithful that the Christian life is not merely the acceptance of an idea or philosophical teaching, but rather a living encounter with the Risen Lord.

“The light of Christ,” reflected Archbishop Daniel, “is not simply a theological concept that we preserve quietly within ourselves. The light of Christ is alive. It transforms the human heart. It heals wounds, illumines darkness, restores hope, and calls us to become reflections of divine love in the world around us.”

His Eminence spoke passionately about the practical application of the Gospel in daily life, reminding the faithful that Christ’s light must be shared through acts of mercy, compassion, forgiveness, and sacrificial love. The Archbishop emphasized that every Orthodox Christian becomes a bearer of Paschal light whenever they comfort the suffering, feed the hungry, defend the vulnerable, care for creation, or offer words of hope to a broken world.

“As long as we care for the light of Christ in our hearts,” Archbishop Daniel proclaimed, “we ourselves become reflections of the brightness of His glory. The world around us may often appear darkened by fear, violence, confusion, and suffering - yet one soul illumined by Christ can bring hope to countless others.”

His reflections deeply resonated with the faithful who had gathered from near and far to participate in the sacred mystery of the Eucharist. One by one, the faithful approached the Holy Chalice to unite themselves with the Risen Lord, receiving the Body and Blood of Christ - the true Light and Life of the world.

Throughout the celebration, the seminarians continued chanting joyful Paschal hymns in various sacred musical traditions - Byzantine chant, Ukrainian traditional chant, Kyivan melodies, and Georgian chant - beautifully revealing the universality of Christ’s Holy Church. Though differing in melody and expression, every hymn proclaimed the same eternal truth: Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen!

The sacred liturgical life of the Orthodox Church once again demonstrated that unity in Christ transcends language, culture, and geography. In the harmony of sacred music, prayer, incense, and Eucharistic communion, heaven and earth mystically embraced.

As the Divine Liturgy concluded in the early hours of the morning, the faithful were invited to the Pokrova parish fellowship hall for a Paschal meal from the blessed foods over which prayers had been offered during the Feast of Feasts. Gathered around the tables of fellowship, clergy, seminarians, parishioners, and pilgrims shared not only food, but also the joy of spiritual family - rejoicing in the gift of Christ’s Resurrection and the unity of the Church.

For forty days the Church celebrated Pascha with radiant joy, proclaiming victory over death itself. Yet the Leave-taking of Pascha is not an ending. Rather, it is a sacred invitation to carry the light of the Resurrection beyond the walls of the temple and into the ordinary moments of human life.

The doors of the church may slowly close after the midnight celebration, the Paschal hymns may become less frequent, and the liturgical season may gently transition toward Ascension and Pentecost - but the light of Christ remains eternal.

And wherever that divine light is carried - darkness can never overcome it.

Віддання Світлого Празника Пасхи

У тиші північних годин, коли темрява ніжно огортала світ, а спокій наповнював територію Духовного Осередку Митрополії Української Православної Церкви США у Саут-Бавнд-Бруку, штат Нью-Джерзі, благодатне світло Пасхи знову прорізало ніч. Духовенство та вірні діти зібралися на молитву в Українській Православній церкві-памʼятнику Святого Андрія Первозванного на останню Нічну Божественну Літургію Віддання Світлого Празника Воскресіння Господа і Спасителя нашого Ісуса Христа.

Протягом сорока священних днів Церква звіщала перемогу життя над смертю, надії над відчаєм, світла над темрявою. І ось тепер, стоячи молитовно на межі між Пасхою та наближенням величного свята П’ятидесятниці, вірні знову входили у таїнство Божої благодаті - несучи радість Воскресіння у життя Церкви та в глибини людського серця.

Співслужили Божественну Літургію: протоієрей Віктор Вронський, настоятель Української Православної Катедри Пресвятої Трійці у Брукліні, штат Ню Йорк; протоієрей Василь Шак, настоятель парафії святого великомученика і цілителя Пантелеймона у Брукліні, Нью-Йорк; о. Іван Чопко, священник каплиці Трьох Святителів у Свято_Софіївській Семінарії; о. Олег Кравченко з парафії Успіння Пресвятої Богородиці у Нортгемптоні, Пенсильванія; о. Святослав Готь, настоятель Свято-Вознесенської Української Православної Парафії у Мейплвуді, Нью-Джерзі; о. Роман Марчишак, настоятель Свято-Троїцької парафії у Трентоні, Ню Джерсі; о. Павло Висоцький, настоятель Української Православної Парафії св. Катерини в Арден-Гіллс, Міннесота; а також диякон Андрій Акуленко з церкви-памʼятника Святого Андрія Первозванного.

Іподиякони, читці та семінаристи Свято-Софіївської Української Православної Богословської Семінарії молитовно прислуговували у святому вівтарі, а хор семінарії  підносив свої голоси, наповнюючи храм красою пасхальних піснеспівів та радістю Воскресіння.

Після читання Євангелія, призначеного на Віддання Пасхи, Архієпископ Даниїл звернувся до вірних із духовними роздумами про вічне світло Христове. Посилаючись на слова Спасителя - «Поки маєте світло, віруйте у світло, щоб стати синами світла» - архіпастир наголосив, що християнське життя - це не лише прийняття певної ідеї чи філософського вчення, але живе єднання з Воскреслим Господом.

«Світло Христове, - зазначив Архієпископ Даниїл, - це не просто богословське поняття, яке ми тихо зберігаємо у собі. Світло Христове є живим. Воно преображає людське серце. Воно зцілює рани, просвічує темряву, відновлює надію та закликає нас бути відображенням Божої любові у світі навколо нас».

Владика Даниїл особливо наголосив на практичному втіленні Євангелія у щоденному житті, нагадуючи, що світло Христове повинно проявлятися через діла милосердя, співчуття, прощення та жертовної любові. Архієпископ підкреслив, що кожен православний християнин стає носієм пасхального світла тоді, коли втішає стражденного, годує голодного, захищає беззахисного, дбає про Боже творіння або приносить слова надії у зранений світ.

«Допоки ми плекаємо світло Христове у своїх серцях, - проголосив Архієпископ Даниїл, - ми самі стаємо відображенням сяйва Його слави. Світ навколо нас часто затемнений страхом, насильством, розгубленістю та стражданнями, однак одна душа, просвічена Христом, здатна принести надію безлічі інших».

Його слова глибоко торкнулися сердець вірних, які прибули з різних місць, щоби взяти участь у священному таїнстві Євхаристії. Один за одним вірні приступали до Святої Чаші, єднаючись із Воскреслим Господом та приймаючи Тіло і Кров Христові - істинне Світло і Життя світу.

Протягом усього богослужіння семінаристи продовжували виконувати радісні пасхальні піснеспіви у різних сакральних традиціях - візантійському розспіві, українському традиційному співі, київському наспіві та грузинському церковному співі - тим самим яскраво засвідчуючи вселенськість Святої Христової Церкви. Хоч мелодії та традиції були різними, усі вони проголошували одну й ту ж вічну істину: Христос Воскрес! Воістину Воскрес!

Священне літургійне життя Православної Церкви знову засвідчило, що єдність у Христі перевершує мову, культуру та географічні кордони. У гармонії священного співу, молитви, кадильного диму та євхаристійного сопричастя небо і земля містично поєднувалися.

Після завершення Божественної Літургії у ранні години ночі вірні були запрошені до парафіяльної зали Покрова Богородиці, де всі розділили пасхальну трапезу із благословенних страв, над якими були піднесені молитви у Свято Свят. Зібравшись навколо столів братнього спілкування, духовенство, семінаристи, парафіяни та паломники ділилися не лише їжею, але й радістю духовної родини - радіючи дару Христового Воскресіння та єдності Церкви.

Протягом сорока днів Церква святкувала Пасху з невимовною радістю, проголошуючи перемогу над самою смертю. Проте Віддання Пасхи - це не завершення. Це священне запрошення нести світло Воскресіння за межі храму - у звичайні моменти людського життя.

Двері храму можуть зачинитися після нічного богослужіння, пасхальні піснеспіви можуть звучати рідше, а церковний календар поступово переходить до свят Вознесіння Господнього та П’ятидесятниці - однак світло Христове залишається вічним.

І всюди, де це Божественне світло буде присутнє - темрява ніколи не зможе його перемогти.

Христос Воскрес! Воістину Воскрес!
