In the quiet and prayerful hours of the night, the sacred grounds of Saint Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church - the spiritual heart of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA - became a place of deep reflection, repentance, and spiritual renewal as the faithful gathered for the Third Sunday of Great and Holy Lent - the Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross.

More than one hundred faithful arrived under the stillness of the night, carrying within their hearts the quiet struggles, hopes, and prayers that mark the journey of Great Lent. In that sacred stillness, the faithful were reminded that the Lenten road is not meant to be walked alone.

Presiding at the midnight Divine Liturgy was Archbishop Daniel, who was joined by clergy from several parish communities: Very Rev. Fr. Vasyl Pasakas, pastor of Saint Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Memorial Church; Very Rev. Fr. Petro Levko of St. George Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Yardville, NJ; Very Rev. Fr. Stephen Motychak of Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, West Islip, NY; Very Rev. Fr. Orest Poukhalskyi of Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Milville, NJ; Rev. Fr. Vasyl Shak of Saint Pantaleimon Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Brookly, NY; and Rev. Fr. Roman Marchyshak of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Trenton, NJ.

Serving in the altar were Protodeacon Pavlo Vystoskyi, Deacon Adrian Mazur and Deacon Andrii Akulenko, while seminarians of St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary prayerfully lifted the liturgical responses in the ancient tones of Kyivan and Galician chant - their voices rising like incense and gently carrying the hearts of the faithful toward the mystery of the Cross.

Before the beginning of the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Daniel solemnly processed with the Cross into the center of the church, placing it upon a beautifully adorned analogion covered in flowers prepared by Subdeacon Mykola Stefanyk and his wife Vitalia.

The Cross itself carries a profound spiritual history.

As Archbishop Daniel explained to the faithful: “This Cross once rested in the hands of Metropolitan John Theodorovich, who brought it to this land as a blessing for our Church. Within it is preserved a relic of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross of our Lord. When we approach this Cross tonight, we are not simply venerating an object - we are touching the living memory of faith carried across generations.”

One by one, the faithful approached, bowing quietly, making the sign of the Cross, and kissing the sacred relic - offering their prayers for their families, their struggles, their homeland, and the world.

During his deeply personal homily, Archbishop Daniel spoke from the heart about the meaning of the Cross appearing at the midpoint of Great Lent.

“My dear brothers and sisters, the Church places the Cross before us today because she knows our human hearts. The journey of repentance is not easy. Fasting is not always easy. Forgiveness is not always easy. And sometimes the road of life itself becomes heavy.”

He paused before continuing: “And so in the middle of Great Lent the Church says to us: ‘Do not lose courage. Look at the Cross.’ The Cross stands before us like a tree of life planted in the desert of our struggles.”

The archpastor reminded the faithful that the Cross reveals the deepest truth about God.

“When we look at the Cross, we see the greatest paradox of our faith. What the world calls defeat, God transforms into victory. What the world sees as suffering becomes the doorway to resurrection.”

Reflecting on the Gospel, Archbishop Daniel stated: “In the sacred services of the Orthodox Church, especially on the Sunday of the Veneration of the Cross, the faithful are invited to contemplate not only the suffering of our Lord but also the profound mystery revealed through the two criminals crucified beside Him.

As the Church lifts up the Holy Cross in the midst of Great Lent, we remember that on Golgotha two men stood on either side of Christ - Saint Dismas and Gestas - representing the two responses of the human heart before the mystery of divine love. Both saw the same Savior, both shared the same suffering, yet one closed his heart in bitterness while the other opened his soul in repentance.

In a single humble prayer - “Lord, remember me when You come into Your Kingdom” - the repentant thief discovered that even at the final moment of life the Cross becomes not a symbol of condemnation but the doorway to Paradise.

For this reason the Orthodox Church venerates the Cross not as an instrument of death, but as the throne of Christ’s mercy, where judgment is transformed into forgiveness and despair into hope. Standing before the Cross today, every believer is invited to see in the Good Thief a reflection of his own soul, learning that the path to salvation begins with humility, repentance, and trust in the boundless compassion of Jesus Christ, who stretched out His arms upon the Cross to embrace the entire world.

Archbishop Daniel also reflected on the connection between the Cross and the pastoral staff carried by bishops.

“The shepherd’s staff reminds us of the staff of Moses, through which God led His people through the sea and through the desert. But today the Cross has become the true staff that guides humanity from slavery to freedom - from sin to eternal life.”

In the Orthodox tradition, the pastoral staff carried by a bishop - often called the archpastoral staff is far more than a ceremonial object; it is a profound theological symbol rooted deeply in the history of salvation revealed in Holy Scripture.

Its meaning reaches back to the time of Moses and Aaron, when God entrusted them with a staff that became a visible sign of divine authority and guidance for His people. Before Pharaoh, the staff of Moses was transformed into a serpent, demonstrating that the power of the living God surpasses all earthly authority. Through this same staff the waters of the Nile were struck, the Red Sea was parted, and the people of Israel were led out of slavery into freedom as they began their long journey toward the Promised Land. In the wilderness, the staff remained a symbol of God’s providence and leadership; it struck the rock so that water might flow for the thirsty people, and it was lifted during battle as a sign that victory belongs to the Lord.

Likewise, the staff of Aaron blossomed miraculously, revealing God’s chosen priesthood and affirming that spiritual leadership is established not by human ambition but by divine calling.

In the life of the Church today, the bishop’s staff recalls these sacred moments of the Old Testament while finding its ultimate fulfillment in the Cross of Christ, the true staff that guides humanity from the bondage of sin toward the eternal Promised Kingdom of God.

When a bishop carries his staff among the faithful, he visibly embodies the role of a shepherd who, like Moses, walks before the people of God - guiding, protecting, and encouraging them on their pilgrimage through the wilderness of this world. The staff therefore reminds the Church that episcopal ministry is not a sign of power or authority in the worldly sense, but a calling to sacrificial leadership under the sign of the Cross, directing the faithful toward Christ, the Good Shepherd, who alone leads His people into the fullness of life.

He added with humility: “A bishop stands not above the Cross but beneath it. The Cross reminds every shepherd of the Church that true leadership is not power - it is sacrifice, service, and love.”

Archbishop Daniel also spoke about the suffering present in the world today. “When we look at the Cross today, we cannot forget the suffering of our brothers and sisters - especially in Ukraine. The Cross reminds us that every human life is sacred, every tear is known to God, and every act of love becomes a seed of resurrection.”

Prayers were offered for the soldiers defending Ukraine, for families separated by war, and for peace in regions of conflict across the world.

“Christ stretched out His arms on the Cross for the entire world - for every nation, every people, every human soul.”

As the Divine Liturgy continued, many faithful approached the Holy Chalice, receiving the Body and Blood of Christ as spiritual nourishment for the remainder of their Lenten journey.

The night concluded with Archbishop Daniel offering a heartfelt blessing to the faithful: “May the Cross strengthen you in your struggles, comfort you in your sorrows, and remind you that the love of God is stronger than any darkness.”

He concluded with words that resonated deeply with those present: “Let us continue the peaceful journey of Great Lent together. And may this sacred road lead us - step by step, prayer by prayer - to the radiant joy of Pascha, where the Cross shines forever as the banner of victory and life.”

And as the faithful slowly departed into the quiet night, the Cross remained in the center of the church - a silent witness to the eternal truth proclaimed that evening: Through the Cross, joy has come into all the world.

Неділя Хреста Господнього молитовно відзначена в церкві-памʼятнику Святого Андрія Первозванного

У тихі та молитовні нічні години священна територія Української Православної церкви-памʼятника Святого Андрія Первозванного - духовного серця Української Православної Церкви США - стала місцем глибокого роздуму, покаяння та духовного оновлення, коли вірні зібралися на Третю неділю Великого і Святого посту -Неділю Хрестопоклонну.

Понад сто вірних прибули у нічній тиші, несучи у своїх серцях тихі життєві боротьби, надії та молитви, які супроводжують шлях Великого посту. У цій священній тиші вірні знову відчули, що дорога посту не є дорогою, яку людина повинна проходити самотньо.

Нічну Божественну Літургію очолив архієпископ Даниїл, якому співслужили священнослужителі з різних парафій: протоієрей Василь Пасакас, настоятель церкви-памʼятника; протоієрей Петро Левко із Української Православної Церкви св. Юрій в Ярдвил, штат Нью-Джерсі; протоієрей Степан Мотичак з парафії святих апостолів Петра і Павла у Вест-Айліпі, штат Нью-Йорк; протоієрей Орест Пугальський з парафії святих апостолів Петра і Павла у Мілвілі, штат Нью-Джерсі; протоієрей Василь Шак з парафії святого великомученика і цілителя Пантелеймона у Брукліні, штат Нью-Йорк; та священник Роман Марчишак з парафії Святої Тройці Української Православної Церкви у Трентоні, штат Нью-Джерсі.

У святому вівтарі служили протодиякон Павло Вистоцький, диякон Адріян Мазур та диякон Андрій Акуленко, а семінаристи Свято-Софійської Української Православної Богословської Семінарії молитовно виконували літургійні відповіді у давніх тонах візантійського, київського та галицького розспівів - їхні голоси, мов кадило, підносилися до небес і тихо провадили серця вірних до таїнства Хреста Господнього.

Перед початком Божественної Літургії архієпископ Даниїл урочисто виніс Хрест до центру храму, поклавши його на гарно прикрашений квітами аналой, оздоблений стараннями піддиякона Миколи Стефаника та його дружини Віталії.

Сам Хрест має глибоку духовну історію. Як пояснив архієпископ Даниїл вірним: «Цей Хрест колись перебував у руках митрополита Іоана Теодоровича, який приніс його до цієї землі як благословення для нашої Церкви. У ньому зберігається часточка Чесного і Животворящого Хреста Господнього. Коли ми сьогодні підходимо до цього Хреста, ми не просто вшановуємо святиню - ми доторкаємося до живої пам’яті віри, переданої через покоління».

Один за одним вірні підходили до Хреста, тихо вклоняючись, осіняючи себе хресним знаменням і цілуючи святу реліквію, підносячи молитви за свої родини, життєві труднощі, свою Батьківщину та за весь світ.

У своїй глибоко особистій проповіді архієпископ Даниїл говорив від серця про значення появи Хреста посеред Великого посту.

«Мої дорогі брати і сестри, Церква ставить перед нами сьогодні Хрест, бо вона знає людське серце. Дорога покаяння не є легкою. Піст не завжди є легким. Прощення не завжди є легким. І часом сама дорога життя стає важкою».

Зробивши коротку паузу, він продовжив: «І тому посеред Великого посту Церква каже нам: “Не втрачайте мужності. Подивіться на Хрест”. Хрест стоїть перед нами як дерево життя, посаджене у пустелі наших життєвих боротьб».

Архіпастир нагадав вірним, що Хрест відкриває найглибшу правду про Бога.

«Коли ми дивимося на Хрест, ми бачимо найбільший парадокс нашої віри. Те, що світ називає поразкою, Бог перетворює на перемогу. Те, що світ бачить як страждання, стає дверима до воскресіння».

Роздумуючи над Євангелієм, архієпископ Даниїл сказав: “У священних богослужіннях Православної Церкви, особливо у Неділю Хрестопоклонну, вірні запрошуються роздумувати не лише над стражданнями нашого Господа, але й над глибокою таємницею, що відкривається через двох розбійників, розіп’ятих поруч із Ним.

Коли Церква підносить Чесний Хрест посеред Великого посту, ми пригадуємо, що на Голгофі по обидві сторони Христа стояли двоє людей - Святий Дисмас та Гестас - які уособлюють дві відповіді людського серця перед таїнством Божої любові. Обидва бачили одного і того ж Спасителя, обидва переживали ті самі страждання, але один закрив своє серце у гіркоті, тоді як інший відкрив свою душу у покаянні. У одній смиренній молитві - «Господи, пом’яни мене, коли прийдеш у Царстві Твоїм» - розкаяний розбійник відкрив, що навіть у останню мить життя Хрест стає не знаком осуду, а дверима до раю.

Саме тому Православна Церква вшановує Хрест не як знаряддя смерті, а як престол Христового милосердя, де суд перетворюється на прощення, а відчай - на надію.

Стоячи сьогодні перед Хрестом, кожен віруючий покликаний побачити у благоразумному розбійнику відображення власної душі та зрозуміти, що шлях до спасіння починається зі смирення, покаяння і довіри до безмежного милосердя Ісус Христос, Який простягнув Свої руки на Хресті, щоб обійняти увесь світ. 

Архієпископ Даниїл також роздумував про зв’язок між Хрестом та пастирським жезлом, який носять єпископи.

«Пастирський жезл нагадує нам жезл Мойсея, через який Бог провів Свій народ через море та через пустелю. Але сьогодні саме Хрест став істинним жезлом, який веде людство від рабства до свободи - від гріха до вічного життя».

У православній традиції пастирський жезл, який носить єпископ - часто званий архіпастирським жезлом є значно більше, ніж просто церемоніальним предметом; це глибокий богословський символ, коріння якого сягає самої історії спасіння, відкритої у Святому Письмі.

Його значення веде нас до часів Мойсей і Аарон, коли Господь довірив їм жезл, що став видимим знаком Божої сили та проводу для Його народу. Перед Фараон жезл Мойсея перетворився на змія, показуючи, що сила Живого Бога перевищує будь-яку земну владу. Через цей самий жезл були уражені води Нілу, розділилося Червоне море, і народ Ізраїлю був виведений із рабства до свободи, розпочавши свою довгу подорож до Землі Обітованої. У пустелі жезл залишався знаком Божого провидіння і керівництва: ним було вдарено по скелі, щоб потекла вода для спраглого народу, а коли він підносився під час битви, це нагадувало, що перемога належить Господу.

Подібно і жезл Аарона чудесно розквітнув, засвідчуючи вибране Богом священство та підтверджуючи, що духовне служіння встановлюється не людськими прагненнями, а Божим покликанням.

У житті Церкви сьогодні єпископський жезл пригадує ці священні події Старого Завіту, водночас знаходячи своє найвище звершення у Хресті Христовому - істинному жезлі, який веде людство від рабства гріха до вічного Царства Божого. Коли єпископ несе жезл серед вірних, він видимо уособлює служіння пастиря, який, подібно до Мойсея, іде перед Божим народом - провадячи, охороняючи та підтримуючи його у паломництві через пустелю цього світу.

Таким чином жезл нагадує Церкві, що єпископське служіння є не знаком влади у світському розумінні, а покликанням до жертовного проводу під знаменом Хреста, спрямовуючи вірних до Христа - Доброго Пастиря, Який один веде Свій народ до повноти життя.

Він додав зі смиренням: «Єпископ стоїть не над Хрестом, а під Хрестом. Хрест нагадує кожному пастирю Церкви, що справжнє керівництво - це не влада, а жертва, служіння і любов».

Архієпископ Даниїл також говорив про страждання, присутні у сучасному світі. «Коли ми сьогодні дивимося на Хрест, ми не можемо забути страждання наших братів і сестер - особливо в Україні. Хрест нагадує нам, що кожне людське життя є святим, кожна сльоза відома Богові, і кожен акт любові стає зерном воскресіння».

Під час Літургії були піднесені молитви за воїнів, які захищають Україну, за родини, розділені війною, та за мир у різних частинах світу.

«Христос простягнув Свої руки на Хресті для всього світу - для кожного народу, кожної людини, кожної душі».

Коли Божественна Літургія продовжилася, багато вірних приступили до Святого Причастя, приймаючи Тіло і Кров Христові як духовну поживу для подальшої дороги Великого посту.

Нічне богослужіння завершилося сердечним архіпастирським благословенням архієпископа Даниїла.

«Нехай Хрест укріпить вас у ваших труднощах, потішить у ваших скорботах і нагадає вам, що любов Божа сильніша за будь-яку темряву».

І на завершення він сказав слова, які глибоко відгукнулися у серцях присутніх: «Продовжуймо разом мирну дорогу Великого посту. І нехай ця священна дорога - крок за кроком, молитва за молитвою - приведе нас до світлої радості Пасхи, де Хрест навіки сяє як знамено перемоги і життя».

І коли вірні повільно виходили у тиху ніч, Хрест залишався у центрі храму - мовчазний свідок вічної істини, проголошеної того вечора: Через Хрест радість прийшла у весь світ.
