War tries to break the human spirit - but it cannot overcome love. It cannot silence compassion. It cannot extinguish faith. Across the ocean, from America to Ukraine, an unbroken bridge of mercy continues to stand - built not of stone, but of prayer, sacrifice, and love. This bridge is the mission of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA (UOC of the USA).
From the very beginning of the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine, the clergy and faithful of the UOC of the USA made a solemn promise to God and to the Ukrainian people: We will not turn away. We will not be indifferent. We will serve.
As Archbishop Daniel has said on behalf of His Eminence Metropolitan Antony: “Compassion is not a theory, nor is love a slogan. The soul of the Ukrainian people does not need well-crafted statements - it needs living acts of mercy. Faith without love is a corpse. Love that does not serve is empty. The only language that truly heals is the language of sacrificial kindness.”
This week, as bombs fell once again on Ukrainian soil, Metropolitan Serhii of Donetsk visited 30 families raising children with severe disabilities. Children in wheelchairs. Children with autism. Children who survived airstrikes and fled burning homes. Their bodies are fragile - but their souls are radiant with hope.
In partnership with the UOC of the USA, Metropolitan Serhii delivered 30 humanitarian packages - food, hygiene supplies, and prayerful support.
“These children are angels among us,” he wrote to Archbishop Daniel. “Their smiles are proof - the light of Christ shines even in wartime. Their parents, who carry them down ten flights of stairs during air raids - these parents are saints of love.”
Metropolitan Serhii shared the heartbreaking reality: “Today I visited 30 families raising children with severe disabilities - children in wheelchairs, children who cannot speak, children who live in constant pain. Yet their souls are full of light. They are Ukraine’s silent heroes.”
These families endure air raids, bombings, blackouts, hunger, and fear, yet they refuse to abandon hope. With support from the UOC of the USA and volunteers of the Donetsk Eparchy, humanitarian aid packages - filled with food, medical hygiene supplies, and love - were delivered to each family.
He continued: “These parents carry their disabled children down ten flights of stairs to shelters during bombardments. They do it exhausted, hungry, trembling - but they do it because love gives them strength. These are the saints of daily life.”
The mission continued at the children’s rehabilitation center of Marianna Tsapenko, where children with disabilities and young war refugees receive care and therapy.
Metropolitan Serhii offered a healing prayer service - anointing each child with holy oil. One little boy held a cross with solemn reverence - standing as still as a young bishop.
“This was a moment of grace,” Metropolitan Serhii said. “Children understand prayer better than adults. They pray from the heart.”
After the prayers, each child received a gift - children’s magazines from Ukraine titled On the Wings of an Angel, along with fruits and sweets sent with love by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.
“Let the little children come to Me, and do not hinder them, for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.” - Matthew 19:14
Metropolitan Serhii also offered a message of spiritual courage: “Sometimes God takes us through fire - not to burn us, but to purify us. In suffering, we either break - or we learn to love deeper. Ukraine has chosen love.”
“We may lose homes, work, even peace - but we must never lose faith. Christ walks with us through the ruins. He turns tears into strength.”
“War will end - not when the last shot is fired - but when the last wounded heart is healed. And that healing begins with mercy.”
He reminded us through Scripture: “Seek first the Kingdom of God… and all these things shall be added unto you.” (Matthew 6:33)
Through the leadership of Metropolitan Antony and Archbishop Daniel, and through the generosity of parishes, clergy, youth ministries, and faithful donors, the UOC of the USA continues to:
- Support displaced families
- Feed hungry children
- Provide medicine and medical care
- Install heating and shelter support
- Support clergy serving near war zones
- Offer rehabilitation for traumatized children
- Bring prayer and spiritual comfort to the broken
Since the beginning of the war, the UOC of the USA has sent millions of dollars in humanitarian aid, not from governments - but from our parishes, our clergy, our faithful, our children.
- Parishes collect medical kits and winter clothing.
- Youth groups create care packages for Ukrainian children.
- Church school students write letters to wounded soldiers.
- Retired parishioners bake bread and knit warm clothing.
- Clergy travel to deliver aid in person.
Archbishop Daniel reminds us: “Christ will not ask us how many eloquent speeches we gave - He will ask us how many people we fed, how many children we embraced, how many broken souls we lifted.”
The words of Holy Scripture guide this mission:
- “Carry one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” - Galatians 6:2
- “Whatever you did for one of the least of these My brethren - you did it for Me.” - Matthew 25:40
- “Let us not love in word or in speech - but in deed and in truth.” - 1 John 3:18
And the Holy Fathers echo this Gospel truth:
- St. John Chrysostom: “If you cannot find Christ in the beggar at the church door, you will not find Him in the chalice.”
- St. Basil the Great: “The bread you keep belongs to the hungry. The coat you guard in your closet belongs to the naked.”
In a time when many feel lost, Metropolitan Serhii reminds us: “Sometimes God allows us to lose what we thought we needed - so we might find what we truly need: Him.”

Even in war - even in darkness - God sends His love through people who choose compassion over comfort.
This work is not finished. There are more families to visit. More wounded souls to heal. More children waiting for light in the darkness.
Archbishop Daniel reminds us: “Love is stronger than evil. Mercy is stronger than missiles. Faith is stronger than war. We will stand with Ukraine - not only until victory, but until healing.”
“Do not grow tired in doing good. Ukraine is calling - not with her voice, but with her tears. Let us answer not with words, but with love.”
Pray. Give. Serve.
Together - we will carry the Cross. Together - we will protect the children. Together - with Christ - love will save the world.

ЛЮБОВ ВРЯТУЄ СВІТ: Серце Української Православної Церкви США б’ється поруч з Україною
Війна намагається зламати людський дух – але вона безсила перед любов’ю. Вона не здатна заглушити милосердя. Вона не може погасити віру. Через океан, від Америки до України, простягається непорушний міст милосердя – збудований не з каменю, а з молитви, жертовності й любові. Цей міст – це місія Української Православної Церкви США (УПЦ США).
З перших днів жорстокого російського вторгнення духовенство та вірні УПЦ США дали урочисту обітницю Богові та українському народові: Ми не відвернемося. Ми не будемо байдужими. Ми будемо служити.
Як наголошує архієпископ Даниїл від імені Митрополита Антонія: «Співчуття – це не теорія, а любов – не гасло. Душа українського народу потребує не гучних заяв, а живих діл милосердя. Віра без любові – мертва. Любов без служіння – порожня. Єдина мова, яка справді зцілює – це мова жертовної доброти».
Цього тижня, поки бомби знову падали на українську землю, митрополит Сергій з Донецька (Православна Церква України) відвідав 30 родин, які виховують дітей з важкими інвалідностями. Дітей у візках. Дітей з аутизмом. Дітей, які пережили авіаудари й втечу з палаючих домівок. Їхні тіла крихкі – але їхні душі сповнені світла і надії.
У співпраці з УПЦ США митрополит Сергій передав 30 гуманітарних пакунків – продукти, засоби гігієни та духовну підтримку. «Ці діти – ангели серед нас», – написав він архієпископу Даниїлу.
«Їхні посмішки – доказ того, що світло Христа сяє навіть у час війни. Їхні батьки, які носять дітей на руках з десятого поверху під час тривог – це святі любові».
«Сьогодні я відвідав 30 родин, які виховують дітей із важкими фізичними вадами – дітей, які не можуть ходити, які не можуть говорити, які живуть у постійному болю. Але їхні душі – чисті, як небо після бурі. Вони – мовчазні герої України», – каже митрополит Сергій.
Ці родини переживають повітряні тривоги, обстріли, відключення світла, голод і страх – але не здаються. З підтримкою УПЦ США та волонтерів Донецької єпархії вони отримали не лише допомогу – вони отримали знак любові, що не зраджує.
«Батьки цих дітей – герої. Вони щодня здійснюють подвиг любові. І ми повинні бути поруч із ними», – додає владика Сергій.
Місія продовжилася у реабілітаційному центрі Маріанни Цапенко, де діти з інвалідністю й маленькі переселенці проходять терапію та отримують психологічну підтримку.
Владика Сергій звершив молебень із помазанням освяченою оливою.
«Діти розуміють молитву навіть глибше, ніж дорослі, бо їхні серця чистіші», – сказав він.
Після молитви кожна дитина отримала подарунок – дитячі християнські журнали «На крильцях ангела» та солодощі й фрукти, надіслані з любов’ю УПЦ США.
«Пустіть дітей приходити до Мене, і не бороніть їм, бо таких є Царство Небесне» (Мт. 19:14)
Митрополит Сергій залишив також духовне послання України й світові: «Іноді Бог дозволяє пройти через вогонь – не щоб знищити, а щоб очистити. У стражданні людина або ламається – або вчиться любити сильніше. Україна вибрала любов».
«Ми можемо втратити дім, працю, спокій – але не маємо права втратити віру. Христос поруч з нами у руїнах. Він перетворює сльози на силу».
«Шукайте ж найперше Царства Божого і правди Його, а це все вам додасться» (Мт. 6:33)
Під проводом Високопреосвященного Митрополита Антонія та Архієпископа Даниїла УПЦ США продовжує:
- підтримувати переселенців і сиріт війни
- годувати голодних дітей
- надавати медичну допомогу
- встановлювати теплі оселі й укриття
- підтримувати священників на передовій
- молитися і піднімати зневірених
З перших днів війни УПЦ США зібрала та передала мільйони доларів гуманітарної допомоги – не від держав, а від парафій, духовенства, молоді, родин, простих людей доброї волі.
Архієпископ Даниїл наголошує: «Христос не запитає, скільки промов ми виголосили – Він запитає, скільки людей ми нагодували. Скількох дітей ми обійняли. Скількі зломлених душ ми підняли».
- «Носіть тягарі один одного і так виконаєте закон Христовий» (Гал. 6:2)
- «Що ви зробили одному з найменших – Мені ви зробили» (Мт. 25:40)
- «Любімо не словом чи язиком, але ділом і правдою» (1 Ін. 3:18)
Святі Отці додають:
- Св. Іван Золотоустий: «Не знайдеш Христа в золотих посудинах – знайдеш у серцях бідних»
- Св. Василій Великий: «Хліб, який ти зберігаєш – належить голодному»
Моліться. Допомагайте. Служіть.
Бо разом – ми сила. Разом – ми світло. Разом з Христом – любов врятує світ.
