St. Sophia’s Theological Library was established to collect and preserve materials and is committed to being a center for learning, research and writing for the St. Sophia Seminary community and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA. See our Collections Policy.
Principal collections of the Library include:
Theological, historical, and literary works;
Rare books;
Reference collections (encyclopedias, foreign language dictionaries, travel guides);
Music collections;
Orthodox and secular journals and periodicals;
Calendars & Almanacs;
Parish Jubilee Books;
Anniversary Books;
Publications of the UOC of USA
(including the Ukrainian Orthodox Word & the Ukrainian Orthodox Calendar from 1947 to the present);
Special collections include:
materials relating to the Holodmor (Ukrainian Famine of 1932-33),
Publications of the Shevchenko Society,
Harvard Ukrainian Studies,
the Ukrainian Academy of Arts & Sciences,
Ukrainian Free University,
and sacred and secular art books.
As a theological library, the holdings support the curricula of the theological programs offered at Saint Sophia Seminary. The Library’s resources are housed in the Library adjacent to the Consistory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA.
The Library serves the needs of the administration, faculty and students of St. Sophia. The Library collection is available as well to all parish priests, members of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, scholars and researchers.
The Library’s online catalog holds substantial resources in English, Ukrainian and other languages. Searches in the Online Catalog must be perfomed using Roman letters. The Library utilized the Library of Congress Ukrainian transliteration for titles in Ukrainian. LIBRARY DONATIONS
St. Sophia Library is actively collecting and accepting new materials. For more information about the scope of collections to arrange a drop-off time for materials, contact the Librarian.
In order to best meet the needs of users, the Library selectively accepts prospective donations. Before making your donation, please search the Library’s On-Line Catalog to check whether or not your item is already part of the Library’s collection.
Please read the Collections Policy of the Library (can be requested from the Librarian) before making your donation. When ready to make a donation, download and complete the Donation Form, which can either be mailed, faxed or e-mailed to the Library. The information will assist the appropriate Library professionals in assessing the gift.
Library Donations are accepted Monday-Friday between the hours of 9 am and 2 pm (135 Davidson Avenue / Somerset, NJ 08873), or by appointment.
RESEARCH APPOINTMENTS
Anyone interested in conducting research at the Library must contact the Librarian to arrange a visit date(s).
