Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA Reaches Out to Wounded Ukrainian Soldiers

For many Americans, the ongoing war in Eastern Ukraine seems like a distant event that rarely reaches into their lives. But at the parish communities of the UOC of the USA, every single Sunday, the congregations come face to face with stories of people wounded in that war and offer prayers, conversations, concern, and a bit of healing for the souls at the places of worship.

I am writing these words at 11:33pm in the city of Lviv, reflecting upon the hours of the day just passed. For the last five days I have been blessed and commissioned by the Church to deliver the financial aid to the refugees and victims of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, today’s visit touched the very core of my spiritual, emotional and moral being…

When a person (a soldier) steps on an explosive device, his whole world explodes. Even when he lives and is promised recovery, life for him and his family gets shaken to the very foundation. This was my experience as a chaplain in the US Army Chaplain Corps. I did not take any active action in the war zone, but the instructors at the Chaplain’s School at Fort Jackson, SC were well versed and taught us to recognize the pains of not only physical suffering, but most importantly the psychological and spiritual effect that any war has upon an individual. While I served as a chaplain, I met people that fought in active war zones, lost their fiends and loved ones. However, today’s experience in Ukraine brought my training and personal feelings to a major spiritual test.

With the help of Metropolitan Makariy of Lviv Archdiocese of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, I visited the Military Medical Clinical Center of the Western Region in Lviv, Ukraine. Since the beginning of the armed conflict this military medical facility treated thousands of war-wounded service members. It is also a well-equipped facility that provides complex care for wartime traumatic bodily injury patients.

The visit to the hospital began with the 30 minute meeting with the coronel Ivan Hayda, who is the chief administrator of the hospital and one of the main physicians of the facility. I quickly learned about the challenges and blessings that the military installation is faced with on the daily basis. The needs for modern medical equipment is real, yet the compassion of the doctors and medical personnel if spiritually uplifting. Here and now, the need is real – the human life is treated as the most sacred gift from God.

Leaving for Ukraine, I thought - how could we not want to reach out to these men and women, their families and the medical personnel who care for them? I am so grateful and blessed to know that our Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA draws people who want to live out their faith. So many people in our parish families want an opportunity to help. My presence in Ukraine, right in the middle of refugee residences and military hospital – are possible because the clergy and the faithful of the Church wanted to help and to make it possible.

…There are wounded warriors with fractured families and fractured lives. There are also myriad caregivers working hard to provide healing. The ability to blend a warm meal with fellowship and camaraderie is a foundational element of many spirit-filled communities. To blend the communities of warriors and healers with a meal, - and our Church family is part of it – is a profound joy!

About 400 wounded soldiers are in the hospital wards. Brought to the hospital by Metropolitan Makariy and later escorted by Very Rev. Fr. John Haluszczak of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Pittsburgh, PA I visited many of these young men. As a bishop of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA I prayed with some of them, were able to converse with the family members and medical staff; yet, not words of encouragement could take the pain away from the face of the 20 year old Andriy, or a bit older Oleksiy, or a younger Oleksander, or a hardly recognizable Oleh (whose body suffered 45% of burns), or Andriy, who is missing his left leg and one could see the bullet entries on his chest…

… I walked out with tears in my eyes… Yet the ministry of the Church must be completed, and so it was… Soldiers and their family members received financial assistance from the Church based on the needs and the recovery time.

… As the day went by I thought of my military training and the story of a soldier who served his nations with pride and sacrifice. After some six years of retirement all of a sudden he was paralyzed from the shoulders down. I thought about his story of fighting for life. He said that, following the medical procedures; first year was a struggle just to survive. It's just what some of the young Ukrainian soldiers are experiencing…

I talked to them about the power of prayer and keeping a positive attitude, and with the help of their family and friends, they're going to realize they can have a wonderful life, even with some physical limitations. As an example, maybe before you got hurt you could do 10,000 activities and after, you can only do 6,000 activities – 6,000 activities is a lot of things you still can do. It depends on how you look at things….

At the hospital, the medical professionals keep the conversation light. But they also try to let the men know they have to be strong. …You can never let negative feelings come in because it takes all your strength to deal with your injuries. You can't let negative feelings sap your strength…

Parts of several of the soldiers’ experiences come from their faith in God and the strong belief that God answers prayers. When we prayer, they closed their eyes and from time to time once could see a tear rolling down the face of someone’s child, the face of a soldier, the face of a child of God…

It is now 01:09AM on Saturday, August 16, 2014 and I am finishing the lines of this reflection. As a Church - We are a community with so many resources – spiritual, economic and emotional. We are wealthy in many ways… lots of people there have a lot to give, especially to those who have given so much of them in the service of their country…

I am thinking of a sum of about $100.000 donated since the beginning of the armed conflict in Ukraine.

I am thinking of so many clergy and parishioners of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA that have given of themselves, through their financial donations to the Charitable Aid to Ukraine Fund, whether through the Church’s Consistory Office of Christian Charity or the ministry of St. Andrew Society.

I am thinking of a lady, who recently sent $5 out of her retirement to help someone’s child in the hospital in Ukraine.

To all of you, my beloved brothers and sisters in Christ – thank you for your compassion, love and prayers. May God bless all of us!

+Daniel,

By the Grace of God your bishop and brother in Christ
