Archpastoral Mission Visit to Znamianka Orphanage in Ukraine

Wednesday, August 13, 2014 was a spiritually uplifting day for everyone at Znamianka Children orphanage of Kirovohrad region. Children, administration staff and volunteers gathered at the main auditorium of the orphanage to welcome a long awaited visitor - His Grace Bishop Daniel, the President of the Consistory of the UOC  of the USA, who was accompanied by Very Rev. John Haluszczak of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox parish of Pittsburgh, PA.

Even though the annually scheduled trip of College students to Ukrainian orphanages was postponed and later cancelled due to the political armed unrest in nearby Eastern Ukraine, the work of the Orphanage Assistance Program of the Consistory Office of Christian Charity continues through the support of educational projects, financing of special education teachers, diapers and food support projects, etc. This year's main project of the Church for Znamianka orphanage is DIAPERS ASSISTANCE EFFORT - which is an attempt of the entire UOC of the USA to collect enough funds in order to purchase the greatly needed diapers for children with major physical and mental disabilities, raging in 5-20 years of age. Recently a few parishes of the Church sent boxes with diapers, while others collected thousands of dollars to fulfill the appeal from the orphanage. Funds still are being collected and will always needed if you would like to participate in this effort.

The bishop's visit to the orphanage included, among other things, various meetings, financial fulfillment of responsibilities and visitations with children. The highlight of the day was a visit of "Chocolate Factory of Clowns" from the local municipal city, which presented a three-hour interactive educational program for the children with disabilities, teaching them to utilize chocolate fondue with fruits and pastries. Speaking to the educators and actors both Bishop Daniel and Fr. John commented on their excellent adoption of the program for children with disabilities, allowing them to learn and have fun at the same time. While the tables and floors of the auditorium were covered in about 16 pounds of melted chocolate, the  lessons and technics learned provided opportunities comparable to any other form of educational approach.

Later in the day, the orphanage dining halls were transformed into semi-cafeteria/restaurant settings, providing 150 children of the facility with the ability to snack upon the sandwiches made out of cold cuts, cheeses, locally grown (the best came from the on site garden) tomatoes, cucumbers and various juices. The joy of children, sharing a meal of love with each other reminded us of the old Agape meals of love that are so needed today in the world of intolerance, abuse and neglect.

Speaking with the staff and special educational teachers of the orphanage, His Grace noted that lessons of care and love at the orphanage are not only learned, they are experienced by the residents and those that offer of themselves in the care of children.

Bishop Daniel also had an opportunity to examine and review the working order of several air conditioners that were paid for and installed by the Church last year. This year's budget allows the administration to invest more costs into physical refurbishing of the 30 year old Soviet-era built structure, in addition to furthering the expansion of the Arts and Crafts room, Orphanage Bakery, and creating a space for parents to visit with their children in private, etc.

Fr. John commented that the orphanage provides an environment for the children to express themselves without the stigma of any disability they may have (they can be the star of the show, singer, the ballroom dancer or simply enjoy themselves however they may choose without feeling they are being judged). The loving support they give each other and receive from their care givers is truly inspirational.

The visit concluded with a formal prayer and farewell dinner in honor of the visitors from the UOC of the USA.

Charitable Archpastoral Visit of Bishop Daniel
