A Visit of Love: 2013 Winter Mission Team to Znamianka Orphanage Returns from Ukraine!

For the past three years the faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA make prayerful efforts to share the great feast of Holy Wonderworker Nicholas with the children of Znaminaka orphanage in Kirovohrad region of Ukraine. This particular orphanage provides daily care for severely handicapped children with mental and physical disabilities.

While departing for Ukraine from St. Sophia Ukrainian Orthodox Theological Seminary in South Bound Brook, NJ, Mr. Joseph Truchan, a missionary of the Church from the Protection of the Birth-Giver of God Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Allentown, PA, reflected on the upcoming visit stating: “I feel like we are about to re-live to great journey to Christ’s manger: we are the visitors from the West, going to the East to visit the newly born and handicapped children, that lay in their cribs daily, willing to share with the world the giggle and unconditional love that comes only from the pure heart of a child!”

And so it was - a spiritually uplifting visit! Sure, the Team did its daily scheduled routine: assist with rehabilitation activities; participate in entertainment programs, etc. But most importantly, the five members of the 2013 Winter Mission Trip to Znamianka orphanage prayed with the children in wheelchairs, with children who suffer from major physical deformities, yet determined to hold in their sometimes twisted arms, a small prayer booklet (published by the Consistory of the UOC of the USA for Mission Trips) and quietly, with a tender voice exclaim every word of a prayer, full of meaning and emotion. As the prayers were chanted, the Team members (Rev. Fr. John and Pani-matka Anne Haluszczak of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Pittsburgh, PA, Olga Liskivska of Protection of the Birth-Giver of God Cathedral in Southfield, MI and Joseph Truchan of Protection of the Birth-Giver of God Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Allentown, PA) whipped off tears on their eyes, while His Grace Bishop Daniel knelt in front of the child to hold a book, so the prayer of a child be offered. The Team traveled to do pretty much what our Lord instructed the seventy to do: to say to those whom we served, "…the kingdom of God has come near to you. God loves you and we love you too!"

As always, the Mission Team traveled to the orphanage with a special treat for the children – a Nativity play by Kropyvnytsky State Theater from Kirovohrad region, who for the last three years make arrangements with the staff of the orphanage to bring winter entertainment to 125 children. In addition to that gift, over 700 pounds of toys, diapers and winter closing were delivered to the Ukrainian orphanages sponsored by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, when the Winter Mission Team of the Church landed in Kyiv Boryspil International Airport on Saturday, December 22nd, 2013.

Moreover, throughout the years, Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA has hired about 15 teachers - rehabilitation specialists to work in the orphanage, which has made a huge impact on the mobility of many children.

As the first day came to conclusion, in front of about 50 children, dressed in their winter play costumes and in the presence of the staff of the orphanage and local journalists, His Grace Bishop Daniel, on behalf of the clergy and faithful of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, presented a Blessed Certificate of Appreciation for love and dedicated service to the director of Znamianka Orphanage – Mrs. Tatiana Ivanivna Walko. Responding to the words of love and great honor, with tears in her eyes, the director stated that a number of children have felt the impact of the presence of the Missionaries of the Church for the last 15 years and especially, the sponsorship of additional teachers and adaptive equipment, sponsored by the Church, which allows handicapped children to move around freely.

Responding to Mrs. Valko’s remarks, Bishop Daniel informed the children and the administration about the new investments that the Consistory of the UOC of the UA approved – the installation of air conditioners in the halls of the orphanage. This extraordinary gift is generously sponsored by St. Mary’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in MacKees Rocks, PA and Protection of the Birth-Giver of God Cathedral of Southfield, MI. Earlier that day, Bishop Daniel traveled to a local installation company to make arrangements and payments for the purchase and installation which will begin in March of 2014.

The six days visit to Ukraine came to conclusion quickly and the time arrived for the final goodbyes of 2013. Tears, hugs and promises to return were exchanged with he children and the staff.

Throughout the trip Bishop Daniel reminded the Team about their ministry with children of Znamianka orphanage, stating: “Remember, God must become an activity in our consciousness… Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around – for a closer relationship with Christ… Very often we forget that “everyone smiles in the same language…”

The Mission team returned to their homes early Saturday afternoon (December 28th). Each missionary, touched by the experience of ten days in Ukraine, was changed - many forever.

While they were sad to leave the children of the orphanage, the Team members encouraged each other to get involved in helping others in their local parishes, communities, stating – “…we will never forget you and we will pray for you. We hope we were instruments of peace to the children. You certainly were to all of us. God Bless all of you…”

Please, note that the College Age Mission trip to Ukrainian Orphanages will travel to Ukraine on 30 May – 14 June, 2014.
