Appalachia Ministry Trip
Appalachia Ministry Trip

Application         |         Flyer (pdf)

In conjunction with the Consistory of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA (Office of Christian Charity), St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Charlottesville (Greenwood), Virginia is pleased to announce plans for the second annual summer mission trip to serve our friends and neighbors in Buchanan County, Virginia, from Sunday, July 7th until midday, on Friday July12. Participants will work on housing construction and renovation efforts locally, under the direction of Buchanan Neighbors United and in support of other local ministries who serve people in need in the region. The visit will allow participants to meet and assist the residents of this region who have been especially afflicted by severe cutbacks in the coal industry - the foundation of the local economy.

Those who wish to participate or have questions about the ministry are encouraged to contact St. Nicholas Church, preferably by email at Appalachia@uocusa.net or 540-456-6981. The minimum age is 21 years old, and while there is no maximum age, the obvious need is for people participating to be able-bodied for the type of work involved. People with construction skills are especially encouraged to apply. The group will be limited to 15 participants and the deadline for applications is Wednesday, May 22nd.

Those who may wish to participate financially are encouraged to send their contribution to:
Attn: Appalachia Ministry
Consistory of the UOC of USA
P.O. Box 495
South Bound Brook, NJ 04440.

Funds are needed for construction materials and special projects. Indeed, the need for financial support does not end when our mission team leaves the vicinity.

Prior trips to the region have allowed us to come to know the people in Buchanan County as warm and hospitable folks, and those who work ministering to the poor locally to be people filled with Christian faith with love of God as their center of lives. Joining with such people allows us to cultivate, in some small way, a greater awareness of how the love of Christ is at work everywhere and becomes especially manifest when His people serve those in need with love.

In the past, we have also found that the needs of the people in this region are spiritual as well as material. Therefore, we implore the members of our Holy Church to pray for those who desire to participate in this holy work and especially for those whom we are called to serve, that He Who is Risen from the Dead may go before us as He did to Galilee, to bring His Good News of grace, encouragement and practical help to His people in the Appalachia region.
