Remembering the Great Son of the Ukrainian Nation in Chicago, IL!
Dobrodijka Liliya Lymar -

For many Ukrainians of all generations, March 9th is a special day. On this day we celebrate the memory of the Great Son of the Ukrainian nation- Taras Shevchenko. One might think that celebrating Taras Shevchenko day every year, he already knows and understands everything about him. This is not the case! Delving deeper into the poet’s works, one realizes that Shevchenko is an inexhaustible and infinite phenomenon. On Sunday, those present at St. Volodymyr’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral’s hall in Chicago tried to comprehend the creative and spiritual heritage of the poet during a concert performed by the students of the School of Ukrainian Studies.

The celebration began with the Lord’s Prayer, sung by the students with the blessing of Fr. Ivan Lymar- pastor of the Cathedral. Throughout the concert, the pupils and teachers showcased their skill in recitation of Shevchenko’s poems. They also presented dramatized scenes depicted in the poems and, of course, performed songs to his poetry.

The audience was charmed by the occasion and not aware that the concert, created by the teachers of the school, was longer than an hour and a half. The highlight of the program was the performance of the youngest participants. The preschool students truly entertained everyone around with their recitation of poems, heartfelt singing and amazing artistic manners.

Moved by the spirit, creativity and power of the Genius of the Ukrainian people, parishioners and guests were heading home with smiles on their faces. At the end, everyone carried in their hearts a burning candle of love for their Homeland reignited by our little Ukrainians. Here in faraway America, they will know who Shevchenko is and remember his statements.
