The “Hawaiian” Myrrh-streaming Iveron Icon of the Theotokos
Sunday, July 10, 2011 was a very special occasion for the parish of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Portland, Oregon. We were honored by a visit of the Myrrh-streaming Iveron Icon of the Theotokos of Hawaii.
This icon is an exact replica of the Montreal Iveron Icon of the Holy Theotokos that Brother Jose Munoz received on Mount Athos. The Montreal Iveron icon became a myrrh-streaming and healing icon and Brother Jose travelled to many parishes with this icon. He was brutally murdered in Greece and the Montreal Iveron icon disappeared.
On Sunday afternoon Reader and icon-keeper Nektarios Yangson of Hawaii brought the replica icon to our church. He was accompanied by Fr. George Gray (Pastor of St. Nicholas Orthodox parish in Portland) and was greeted at our church by our priest, Father Ivan Petrouchtchak and a great number of parishioners. The hymns from Akathist to the Virgin Mary were sung after which Reader Nektarios related the events regarding this myrrh-streaming icon. (The full account of how this icon began streaming myrrh can be found at www.orthodoxhawaii.org/icons.html.) Following Reader Nektarios’ explanation, the faithful venerated this beautiful icon and were anointed with the rose scented myrrh that flows from this icon.
Since June 2008, this icon has travelled to over 250 Orthodox churches in the United States. St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Portland is the first Ukrainian Orthodox church in the United States of America to receive this icon.
