This compilation of sacred melodies is intended to serve as a basic score to accompany the celebration of the Divine Liturgy in the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. It contains all of the sung responses, arranged in the order of service. The material for each response has been selected for ease of singing either by a small vocal ensemble, a youth group, or an entire congregation. The musical settings included herein are based on harmonized Kyivan plainchant melodies, together with some well-known composed pieces. In addition, this work has a parallel Ukrainian-English format, which permits a cantor or a group of singers to change at will from one language to another. |

Серед тих скарбів духової культури нашого народу одно з перших місць займає церковний спів Української Православної Церкви, Літургійний Збірник якого поблагословлений уже до видання на ознаменування тисячоліття хрещення України-Руси. Церковний спів- це мистецтво душі богонадхненного творця для душі об'єднаного з ним у молитві побожного мирянина. Збірник цей містить у собі церковні співи тисячолітньої давности, які пізніше записані були в сучасній нотації, незалежно від їх походження: візантійського, старослов'янського чи київського (українського). Вони, ці співи, певний час паралельно творилися і змагалися за своє існування, аж поки церковний спів княжого київського періоду, ставши на тверду основу народнопісенної творчости з її невичерпним багатством різних напівів, мелодій і стилів, не спромігся на свою мистецьку самостійність. Цей збірник чудово покриває всі частини Літургії і включає композиції написані такими відомими композиторами як: Прот. К. Стеценка, М. Леонтовича, О. Кошиця, М. Іпполітова-Іванова, Архиєпископа Ніканора, Прот. П. Турчанинова, Гр. Давидовського, П. Гончарова, С. Панченко, М. Вербицького, Н. Соколова і більше.

It was prepared and produced by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA for the benefit of its many parish churches around the country. The parallel English and Ukrainian format is designed to give a cantor or a group of singers the greatest amount of flexibility when singing the responses. The material in this issue is based on traditional Kyivan melodies. |

The World of Mykola Lysenko follows the development of Ukrainian musical culture in the second part of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Questions of ethnic identity, music and politics are discussed in the context of the Ukrainian cultural milieu. The authors profile the founder of the Ukrainian national school of music, Mykola Lysenko, composer, music folklorist, pianist, pedagogue and prominent public figure. A recognized leader among Eastern European ethnomusicologists and composers, Lysenko derived his creative inspiration from songs of his native land and was an ardent promoter of Ukrainian folk music. Unique photos of public and cultural figures, composers, writers, artists, historians, and ethnographers are featured. Extensive materials reconstruct a broad panorama of the civic and cultural life of Ukraine at the turn of the 20th century. Much of the material presented is published for the very first time.
